ODSessions of the University of Murcia collects 150,000 cigarette butts in one hour in the center of Murcia (09/11/2019)

The ODSesiones project of the University of Murcia (UMU), framed in the project to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has organized together with Murcia Region Clean the initiative 'Murcia without butts', in which about one One hundred volunteers collected 150,000 butts in Murcia in just one hour.

The participants left the Plaza de Santo Domingo to visit gardens, streets and the main squares of the urban center of Murcia, finishing the tour in the Plaza de Las Flores.

Dressed in gloves, in addition to collecting cigarette butts, they distributed recycled containers among smokers to raise awareness of their polluting power.

Each butt can contaminate between 8 and 10 liters of sea water and up to 50 liters if it is fresh water, and its intake can be a cause of direct mortality in birds and cetaceans.

For the organizers, "education is the most effective way to fight a gesture as daily but as uncivious as throwing a cigarette butt on the ground."

Under the motto #StopColillas, volunteers explained to Murcia smokers that tobacco is made up of more than 4,000 chemicals, among which Cadmium, arsenic, tar or toluene stand out for their high polluting power.

In fact, the materials that make up the filter of cigarettes can take an average of ten years to degrade, so they are part of the urban landscape or our beaches more than a decade if they are not deposited in the containers.

This activity is framed in SDG 6: 'Water and sanitation'.
