The UMU ODSessions project organizes around twenty activities around "Clean water and sanitation" (04/11/2019)

The ODSesiones project of the University of Murcia (UMU), framed in the project to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), organizes between November 6 and 28, 2019 about twenty activities around SDG 6 'Water clean and sanitation ', in the Faculties of Chemistry and Biology of the Espinardo Campus.

The first activity will be held on November 6, which will present the European Life Invasaqua project, which fights against invasive species in freshwater ecosystems and estuaries.

Specifically, in the Segura basin there are more than 60 invasive species of fauna and about 15 species of flora.

That same day will be followed by the conference 'Dismantling the myths of water', by technicians from Aguas de Murcia.

On November 9 a visit will be made to the Drinking Water Treatment Station (ETAP) of La Contraparada, between the districts of Javalí Nuevo and Javalí Viejo de Murcia.

UMU students will be able to go through the process of water purification and visit the laboratory to know the basic aspects to be measured in water quality.

On the other hand, on Saturday, November 9, one of the main activities of SDG 6, 'Murcia without butts' will arrive, in which hundreds of volunteers will tour the historic center of Murcia under the motto #StopColillas.

In this activity, citizens will be made aware that each cigarette butt can contaminate up to 10 liters of water and it takes 10 months to degrade to disappear from nature without proper management.

Butts from streets, parks and terraces will be collected, and recycled containers will also be distributed among smokers.

IV Meeting for Water

The Faculty of Law will host on November 12 the IV Meeting for Water, under the title 'The consideration for urban water services'.

On this day, organized by the Chair of Water and Sustainability of the UMU, the Professor of Administrative Law of the University of Barcelona, ​​Joaquim Tornos, will participate.

On November 13, students will make a new visit, this time to the Waste Water Treatment Station (WWTP) Murcia East.

That day they will know first-hand the integral water cycle and, in parallel, the latest research and development projects undertaken by Aguas de Murcia will be announced.

Pilot plant of artificial wetlands

The activities will continue on November 20, through a solidarity fair with the NGOs: Architecture Without Borders, Chair of Water and Sustainability, Unesco Murcia Center and Sustainable Development Foundation.

That same day will present the project 'Pilot plant of artificial wetlands', where this soft technology of low cost or zero energy cost will be released - which would mitigate the effects of agricultural activity on the salt lagoon of the Mar Menor, between other aquatic systems affected.

To end the activities on November 20, a cooperator of the NGO Architecture Without Borders will give the conference 'Obtaining and managing water in Guatemala and Senegal'.

On November 21, the day 'Water eco-efficiency in the agri-food industry' will take place, in which the UMU professor Miguel Ángel Cámara will coordinate the presentation of projects related to water eco-efficiency and sustainable management indicators in collaboration with companies and the Conservation and Food Technology Center.

Photography competitions and workshops

On November 27, the prizes of the I Painting Contest 'Landscapes of Water and Orchard of the Region of Murcia' will be presented, as well as the I Photography Contest 'Landscapes of Water', organized by the Chair of Water and Sustainability of the UMU .

That same day a group of chemistry students will carry out a work on the different processes of 'Seawater Desalination', so that the works will be exhibited in the 'Week of Chemistry'.

On November 27, it will end with two workshops: one on 'Control of water pollution and purification technologies';

and a 'Practical workshop for the construction of a dry latrine with double chamber abomers', which will focus on the importance of latrinization in developing countries.

Visit to the Columbares Fountain

During the month of November, university students will also visit the green filter of Columbares Fountain thanks to the Sustainable Development Foundation.

During the activity a didactic presentation on water quality will take place, and they will make an itinerary guided by the subsurface flow wetland of the natural site of Fuente de Columbares.

Likewise, the photographic exhibition 'Aguas de Murcia Solidaria' will be presented, on water infrastructure projects that allow access to water in third countries carried out by non-governmental organizations.

The exhibition 'Architecture conscious' will also be inaugurated by Architects without Borders, as well as the exhibition of painting and photography 'Landscapes of water'.

After carrying out thematic activities on the 'End of poverty' (SDG 1), 'Zero hunger' (SDG 2), 'Health and Wellbeing' (SDG 3), 'Quality education' (SDG 4) and 'Gender equality '(SDG 5), this November the activity will be focused by the sponsoring company Aguas de Murcia in' Water and Sanitation '.
