Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in the treatment of chronic pain (01/11/2019)

The UCAM holds a scientific seminar on the benefits of this technique in amputee patients

That the world surrounding the person who has suffered an amputation is very complex from many points of view, was one of the ideas highlighted by the experts who participated in the scientific seminar on the integral recovery of the amputee patient, organized by the Chair of Hyperbaric oxygen therapy of the UCAM.

Dr. José Fabregat, director of the Chair spoke about the latest advances in the medical use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy: "It has a series of recognized indications that, as a result of clinical experience and research, are growing."

Regarding its application in people who have suffered an amputation, he noted that one of the fields where great efficacy has been seen is the treatment of chronic pain and significantly in neuropathic pain, acting beneficially in the peripheral nerve.

"The medical practice has allowed us to verify how amputated patients with phantom limb pain of very poor control with traditional means, improved greatly with hyperbaric chamber treatment," he said.

Soraia Cristina Tonon da Luz, physiotherapist and vice chancellor of the UDESC State University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) also participated in the seminar.

As he stressed during his intervention, for all the professionals of the multidisciplinary team that cares for people who have suffered an amputation, "the integral rehabilitation of the patient remains a challenge, because the complexity of each case makes the team have to be very up to date and pending treatment follow-up ".

Another speaker was Carlos Ventosa, vice president of the National Association of Amputees of Spain, who remarked that from it "we are trying, through the Ministry of Health, to see if you can protocolize multidisciplinary teams in hospitals, so that in the moment everything gets under way between an amputated person. Including psychologists that we currently don't have and their role is very important. "

During the event, the Master's Degree in Hyperbaric and Underwater Medicine was presented, which is launched this academic year, and whose objective is to train professionals in the field of hyperbaric medicine in order to access clinical practice and disseminate and give visibility to hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
