The PSOE claims aid for Murcia students who want to do an Erasmus and the creation of a youth center in Carmen (27/10/2019)

The councilor, Carmen Fructuoso, denounces that the local administration does not bet on the youth of the municipality of Murcia since it does not address their problems and does not offer them economic support, or healthy leisure.

The municipality of Murcia currently has 104,730 young people between 15 and 35, distributed between the city center and the 59 districts and 24 neighborhoods of our municipality.

These young people represent 24% of Murcia and Murcia, a considerable amount.

It is also well known that our young people are currently facing great challenges and problems such as unemployment, job insecurity, emancipation difficulties or the shortage of healthy leisure activities.

From the Municipal Socialist Group we consider it essential that the local administration be a real support that young people can use to face these challenges.

The socialist councilor, Carmen Fructuoso, denounces that the Government team of the City of Murcia is not meeting its obligations as it should.

"Disregards the needs of our youth, does not bet on them and leaves them not prioritizing their problems," protests the mayor.

One of the training activities most appreciated by our students is international mobility.

The Erasmus program has been an academic and citizen success.

For the 2019-2020 academic year 334 students have applied for this scholarship, all of them registered in the municipality.

"However, it suffers from an important barrier: the economic one. Every year there are many students who have to give up this scholarship for not having enough resources or have to choose destinations with less high incomes, and what does our town hall do about it ? "asks the councilwoman.

"As the closest and immediate administration to citizens, I should be making a firm commitment to the internationalization of our young university students by offering them extra financial support," explains Fructuoso.

For these reasons, the socialist mayor urges the government team to provide assistance that goes for a minimum of € 50 and a maximum of € 200 per month according to income for Erasmus students and, in addition, this help is provided at the beginning.

"On the other hand, we propose that the feasibility of subsidizing other university mobility programs be studied," adds Fructuoso.

Another problem to consider in our municipality is that we only have three youth centers: Puente Tocinos, El Palmar and Santa Maria de Gracia.

"Three centers to serve 24% of the population is obviously an insufficient amount," protests the councilor.

"Youth centers are necessary spaces to offer our young places with healthy leisure offers. They are meeting points between them where they can develop their creatives and concerns and we do not understand why the City Government team is neglecting them," the councilwoman demands.

The Barrio del Carmen is the area of the municipality of Murcia where more young people reside, 4634 young people between 12 and 30 years in 2017, lacking in the area of a young space.

"For this reason we believe it is an ideal area to enable a new young space. We have the Artillery Barracks, located in the Barrio del Carmen, a building that could be perfectly adapted to give this service to our young people.", Concludes Fructuoso.
