María Costa, 97, and José Guillén, 100, elected Grandparents of the Year 2019 (26/10/2019)

More than 300 people attended the XXV Homage to the Grandparents, held at Puente Bacon, in which the winners of this edition were proclaimed.

In total, 32 candidates appeared for this contest, representing 17 districts spread throughout the municipality and five neighborhoods in Murcia.

José Ballesta: "Through meetings like this, Murcia pays tribute to the elderly, recognizing their sincere commitment to society."

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Seniors, Disability and Development Cooperation, Paqui Pérez, attended the XXV Tribute to the Grandparents, held in the Murcia neighborhood of Puente Tocinos, in which more than 300 people, among participants, family and friends.

"For its fundamental work, Murcia pays tribute to the elderly, recognizing the sincere commitment they have with society through meetings such as the one we celebrate today," said the mayor of Murcia, who added that "together with them, they participate actively in the 76 social centers for the elderly in the municipality of Murcia, we build a better society â€.

On this occasion, the Grandparents of the Year 2019 chosen are María Costa Pérez (03/02/1922), 97, from the social center of Mayores de Torreagüera, and José Guillén Baños (10/08/1919), 100 years old , coming from the social center for the elderly of Gea and Truyols, who were given a trophy.

The event was attended by the president of the Federation of Social Centers for the Elderly of the municipality of Murcia, Simón Párraga.

Also, during the meeting a ceramic gift was granted to all participants.

Subsequently, a lunch was held in the celebrations hall of Mesón La Torre.

More than thirty candidates between 79 and 100 years old

In total, 32 candidates appeared for this contest, between 79 and 100 years old, representing 22 senior centers distributed throughout the municipality.

Of the number of participants mentioned, 17 were men and 15 women, with couples coming from La Albatalía, Santo Ángel, Casillas and El Puntal.

Specifically, the participants came from the social centers with more than 17 districts and five neighborhoods in Murcia (Gea and Truyols, Zeneta, La Albatalía, Llano de Brujas, Santo Ángel, Cabezo de Torres, Rincón de Seca, Puente Tocinos, Zarandona, Casillas, Sangonera La Seca, La Arboleja, El Puntal, Torreagüera, La Cueva, Barqueros, El Raal, as well as the neighborhoods of Vistalegre, La Flota, San Pío X, San Antón and San Andrés-San Antolín).
