A training center, a waste processing system and an app, proposals recognized in Climathon 2019 (25/10/2019)

The winning projects of Climathon 2019 have already been announced, which in this edition has been dedicated to 'How to improve waste management in the Huerta de Murcia'.

Thus, the best rated proposals have been the following:

Training center on sustainable agriculture: proposal of a center for teaching courses for different sectors and groups such as schools, producer and consumer associations, public administration, etc.

Awards and compensation: waste processing system through light transport structures for later sale

App 2.0 crusher: smart access by farmers to the most suitable waste crushers in terms of distance and adaptation to the type of waste

The different solutions to the challenge have been raised in open session and these three best contributions have received a certificate and will be taken into account in the next municipal initiatives to be implemented in the field of preservation and recovery of the Garden.

In addition, the jury has recognized four other proposals:

Agricultural challenge platform: website to connect those interested in solving agricultural challenges with experts to solve them.

Agroecology education program: proposal for a training program in agroecology as transversal knowledge for teachers and students

Local composting: rental and / or sale of composters, accompanied by advice, for on-site composting of agricultural and household waste

Sustainable pilot orchards: development of experimental orchards on unoccupied farms where sustainable cultivation techniques are tested that serve as an outdoor example for further development and commercialization

The jury has been composed of Francisco Carpe (Head of the Environment Service, Murcia City Council), Gines Luengo Gil (Dean of the Official College of Biologists of the Region of Murcia), MªCarmen Hernández (Director of ALEM, City Council of Murcia), Herminio Picazo (Ecopatrimonio) and Pepe Leal (President of the Association of Friends of the Huerta “Azacayaâ€).

Councilman Antonio Navarro has indicated that “Climathon Murcia 2019 has been a resounding success in terms of participation and proposal of innovative solutions.

The City of Murcia now has a good number of proposals developed by the attendees to try to solve the proposed challenge on improving the management of waste from the Huerta de Murcia.

The implementation of these solutions will serve to reduce the generation of waste and provide it with value, reduce the impact of agricultural activities and improve the local environment, thereby contributing to the fight against climate change. â€

The Climathon 2019 is the largest global climate change event that is held simultaneously in major cities around the world.

Each participating city proposes its own local climate challenge, designing an event around a specific climate challenge and, on this occasion, the challenge proposed by the City Council has been 'How to improve waste management in the Huerta de Murcia'.

During the day, held at the Puertas de Castilla, about a hundred professionals and entrepreneurs participated in this dynamic event, guided by experts, creating solutions and developing them in the form of tangible projects.

After a plenary session that has helped participants to contextualize the challenge and learn about the problem of waste management from agriculture, and in particular from the Huerta de Murcia, the inspiration session on the challenge has begun, where a Group of experts in the field have contributed in each field in an interactive and participatory format of the Dialogue Table.

These experts have also acted as mentors in each of the solution ideation working groups, accompanying the participants during the development of the idea.

During the event, international connections have also been established with other cities that pose similar challenges and have talked about the solutions they are working on.

In this way, the City of Murcia seeks solutions to the problem of waste management in the Garden, in areas such as the treatment and recovery of organic waste, plastics, water and emissions, solutions for comprehensive management of large-scale waste and waste Small-scale zero waste, soil restoration, the development of innovative / intelligent systems, sustainable agriculture and the creation of new business models.
