The City Council opens the 2020 calendar for the celebration of civil marriages (19/10/2019)

The City of Murcia has opened for the entire year 2020 the calendar for the celebration of civil marriages.

This is one of the novelties of the office of Civil Marriages and De facto Couples, a service dependent on the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, directed by Mercedes Bernabé.

"These ceremonies are hosted in the Plenary Hall, the most emblematic place of the town hall, where some of the most important decisions of the municipality are taken, as is also joining in marriage," says the mayor.

According to the data offered by this service, so far this year, that is, until October 2019, a total of 118 civil marriages have been held in the City Council.

The City Council approved the realization of civil marriages in 1995. Thus, from that date until today, a total of 5,520 couples have chosen the town hall of Murcia to join in marriage.

Fridays in the afternoon and Saturdays in the morning are the days established by the session for the celebration of weddings, except for dates indicated as Christmas, Holy Week, Spring Festival, August, as well as the first week of September.

The estimated time to marry in the City of Murcia, from when a couple begins the process in the Civil Registry until the ceremony is held, is usually between 5 and 6 months.

When the parties or some of them are foreigners or divorced, the time is longer, between eight or nine months.

As for the rates, the civil marriage service amounts to 201.85 euros, while the issuance of the de facto certificate is 6 euros.

There is a 50% reduction for those couples who are in a situation of demand for employment at the time of requesting the service.

On the other hand, in July 1994, the City Council approved the possibility of registration as a common-law couple.

Specifically, from that date until March 2019, a total of 5,158 registrations have been registered.

First wedding as a councilwoman

Mercedes Barnabas officiates this weekend his first marriages as councilor of the City of Murcia.

This function can be exercised by all the mayor of the municipal corporation, in a turn established by the Protocol Service.

"It is one of the most emotional moments for me since I began my career as a councilor of this session, it is a new experience and, in addition, it is a very special day for people who decide to marry in this session," says the mayor .

The Office of Civil Marriages and De facto Couples is located on the ground floor of the Glorieta de España, from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 2 pm.
