Twenty-five women and a man with breast cancer start the UMU physical activity program to improve their quality of life (18/10/2019)

The Sports Medicine Center of the University of Murcia began on October 15 the second edition of the Active Woman program;

a physical activity protocol designed for women diagnosed with breast cancer with the aim of improving their quality of life.

Active Woman, which is developed in collaboration with the Amiga association, starts this course with a group formed by 25 women and a man who have put themselves in the hands of the professionals of the University of Murcia who, after evaluating their physical condition, will offer To each of these people, personalized exercise guidelines.

During the past year 37 women participated in this program.

The staff of the Sports Medicine Center performs the participants initial tests of body composition and various strength tests in the most important muscle groups at functional level;

as well as tests of cardiopulmonary resistance and respiratory capacity.

These tests have started this week in small groups.

Once each participant has their results and, taking into account the characteristics of their disease and the treatments that are followed in each case, the staff of the University of Murcia will prepare exercise tables and routines.

Throughout the academic year they will be subject to very thorough controls and permanent evaluations to measure their evolution and adapt their activity to these physical changes.

During the first edition of Active Women, participants performed these exercises at home or in gyms on their own;

However, one of the novelties of this course is that there will be group training at UMU facilities.

"Physical exercise also has a very clear effect on patients in their mood and this also contributes to the fact that the participants interact with each other and create a bond. That is why we have included sessions this year. joint training in the program ", explains Carlos Pérez, head of the Sports Activities service of the UMU.

The selection of participants in Active Woman is carried out through the Amiga association, with which the University of Murcia has a collaboration agreement.

Scientific evidence

Scientific studies have demonstrated the importance of physical exercise in breast cancer patients for the improvement of their quality of life.

In addition, some therapies applied in the treatments involve associated complications that can improve with the practice of proper physical activity.

Many women who overcome the disease manifest comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, osteoporosis, among other complications.

Fatigue is usually a symptom associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.

Research published in 2017 (Patel and Bhise, 2017; Indian Journal of Palliative Care 23: 355-361) showed that continued aerobic exercise improves these symptoms.

Another study, also published in 2017 and conducted with women undergoing radiotherapy treatments, concluded that aerobic exercise, combined with strength exercises, manages to mitigate this fatigue (Lipsett et al, 2017; Breast 32: 144-155).

The same occurs in the decrease of joint strength in operated women and with chemotherapy treatment.

The results of the work indicate that strength training during chemotherapy helps prevent the decrease in muscle strength and endurance.
