Murcia, a national example in the fight against climate change (17/10/2019)

The Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, has attended this morning the National Day of the Covenant of the Mayors for Climate and Energy held in Malaga.

During the meeting, organized by the European Office of the Mayor's Covenant, issues such as the present and future of the Mayor's Covenant, the needs of the municipalities or the connection of the Covenant with national policies

The City of Murcia is working on both the Climate Change Mitigation Strategy and the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.

In the latter, 31 measures of the 61 existing proposals have been prioritized, the cost of which will be 17.5 million euros.

The document places Murcia among the first Spanish cities that have this instrument, essential to face a sustainable future.

The councilor explained that "the City of Murcia again takes the initiative and becomes the first in the Region and one of the few in Spain to have a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, commitment acquired after its accession in 2016 to the European Covenant of Mayors for climate and energy ".

The document contemplates different actions such as creating a permanent information point in the garden, increasing areas of freshness, implementing incentives for energy efficiency in homes or developing an ordinance for saving and efficient use of water.

In recent months the City Council has carried out various actions that contribute to the fight against climate change.

Thus, LED technology is being installed in the luminaries of the streets of the municipality, the public transport fleet with clean energy of compressed natural gas is being expanded, the 2030 Forestry Strategy is being developed that will allow reaching 200,000 trees planted in 2030, doubling the specimens in the municipality as a whole and pruning is being promoted among small farmers, among other initiatives.

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is an initiative whereby local and regional authorities assume the voluntary commitment to improve energy efficiency and use renewable energy sources in their territories.

Through this commitment, the signatories of the Pact intend to overcome the objective of the European Union to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% before 2030 and increase the resilience of municipalities by adapting to the impact of climate change.
