Izquierda Unida-Verdes Murcia supports concentration against poverty and inequality (16/10/2019)

IU-Greens of the municipality of Murcia joins the concentration on the occasion of the International Day against poverty and inequality, which will take place on Thursday 17 in the Plaza de Santo Domingo, at 20 h, convened by the Murcian Coordinator of ONGD.

The municipal coordinator of the organization, Alicia Martínez, encourages the participation of citizens in this symbolic act and recalls that "ending poverty requires political will", also insists on the need not to forget the inhuman situation suffered by more and more people on our planet and demands to the Public Administrations a greater effort of financing for the projects dedicated to the Development.

From IU-Verdes Murcia we also understand this act as a gesture "to become aware of a reality that is not alien to the life of our municipality."

For Alicia Martínez, "it is not possible to close our eyes to the evidence of the effects of poverty and inequality in our neighborhoods and districts" and sets as an example the recent publication of data on statistics of taxpayers of IRPF 2017, in which four Murcia districts are among the ten poorest districts in the state, with an income per declarant around 18,000 euros.

In the same vein, recent studies by CES and UMU confirm the salary gap that places the difference in salary between men and women at 24'8% per year, to the detriment of these.

Not forgetting the EAPN data that warn that 1 in 3 children in the Region are at risk of poverty and social exclusion.

These evidences, so close and in sight of all, contrast with the image of a kind and intelligent city that we see every day in institutional advertising, while outside the city center, betting houses or municipal social services grow, do not provide for attend thousands of cases of poverty, helplessness or precariousness that affect children and women in a very special way.

"It is evident that a change in the political priorities of the municipal government is required, more focused on SmartCity projects than in reducing the growing inequality in our neighborhoods, it is urgent to make our municipality a place of opportunities for everyone and not just a good photo album for institutional propaganda, "concludes Alicia Martínez.
