Tribute to Torres Fontes, professor of the UMU, medievalist and teacher of historians, in the centenary of his birth (16/10/2019)

The medievalist Juan Torres Fontes, a professor at the University of Murcia for more than 65 years, this year would have turned one hundred.

For this reason, tomorrow Thursday, at 6:30 pm, a tribute will be offered in his memory at the Royal Academy Alfonso X the Wise of Murcia, in which María Teresa Marín Torres, director of the Salzillo and Academic Museum of the Alfonso will participate X;

Ángel Luis Molina Molina, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Murcia and also Academic;

María Ángeles Jover Carrión, Director of the Municipal Archive of the City of Murcia, and Cristina Torres-Fontes Suárez, a doctor in Art History, being moderated by Juan González Castaño, Director of the Royal Academy Alfonso X el Sabio.

Professor of Medieval History at the UMU, Juan Torres Fontes held various academic positions in the institution during the 60s, 70s and 80s, such as Secretary of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, Secretary General of the UMU and Vice Chancellor of Research, also being Director of the Royal Academy Alfonso X el Sabio between 1976 and 2007, Director of the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country (1951-75), Director of the Salzillo Museum (1955-71) and Official Chronicler of the City of Murcia since 1958.

He published about 400 articles and 40 books on the history of Murcia.

"The most satisfactory thing for a teacher is that the students fly alone, that they have their own criteria," he told the University of Murcia Campus magazine in one of his last interviews, and he dedicated himself for decades, leaving a good number of historians disciples.
