How to improve waste management in the Huerta de Murcia (16/10/2019)

Murcia will join next October 25, and for the fourth consecutive year, Climathon 2019, the largest global climate change event that is held simultaneously in major cities around the world.

Each participating city proposes its own local climate challenge, designing an event around a specific climate challenge and, on this occasion, the challenge proposed by the City Council is 'How to improve waste management in the Huerta de Murcia'.

The Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, explained that "the Huerta de Murcia has a historical-cultural-environmental and landscape value forged for over a thousand years, allowing the existence of an ecological ring around the city that confers to the territorial group a great wealth.Today, one of the problems of the garden is the management of waste from agricultural, organic and plastic activity mainly, since, in general, this waste is managed with unsustainable practices such as burning of stubble and non-separation or revaluation thereof. "

Thus, the Climathon 2019 will take place in Murcia on October 25 at the Puertas de Castilla Municipal Center, on a continuous schedule from 9 to 18 hours, the number of participants being limited to 30.

The event is mainly aimed at companies, entrepreneurs and professionals committed to the new challenges of climate change, and with their contributions help solve the local challenge and make Murcia a more resilient and circular city.

Registration remains open until October 22 (or until places are sold out).

For this, the City of Murcia has designed a dynamic event, where participants will work in teams guided by experts, creating solutions and developing them in the form of tangible projects during this day.

After a plenary session that will help participants to contextualize the challenge and learn about the problem of waste management from agriculture, and in particular from the Huerta de Murcia, the inspiration session on the challenge will begin, where a group of subject matter experts will contribute in each field in an interactive and participatory format of the Dialogue Table.

These experts will also act as mentors in each of the solution ideation working groups, accompanying the participants during the development of the idea.

The event will complement with a session on making short presentations and preparing the final pitch.

The different solutions to the challenge will be presented in open session and the three best contributions will receive a certificate and will be taken into account in the next municipal initiatives to be implemented in the field of preservation and valorization of the Garden.

During the event, international connections will be established with other cities on the planet that pose similar challenges and will talk about the solutions they are working on.

In this way, the City of Murcia seeks solutions to the problem of waste management in the Garden, in areas such as the treatment and recovery of organic waste, plastics, water and emissions, solutions for comprehensive management of large-scale waste and waste Small-scale zero waste, soil restoration, the development of innovative / intelligent systems, sustainable agriculture and the creation of new business models.

Advantages of participating in the Climathon

Councilor Antonio Navarro explained that "Murcia is part of Climathon because it is an opportunity to share the main challenges of cities, with municipal officials and professionals and citizens who have the passion and ability to solve them and a showcase to show practical solutions in the fight against climate change in cities. In addition, we are part of a global community that works to boost climate action. "

In the last edition of 2018, 113 cities from 46 countries were registered, with more than 5,000 participants who contributed more than 400 solutions for climate action and 17,600 tweets.

The Climathon is an event designed by Climate-KIC, a European initiative to combat Climate Change that encourages public and private partnerships to respond to the challenge of building a carbon-free economy.

This initiative was launched for the first time on June 18, 2015, involving 19 cities around the world and more than 2.6 million people.

Currently CLIMATHON is the biggest event around the challenges of Climate Change that exists.

The City of Murcia celebrates the Climathon consecutively since 2016, an event in which students, entrepreneurs, technicians and experts work intensively in defining solutions to the challenges posed by climate change.

Each edition has worked with a challenge on climate change. Thus, in 2016 the theme was' How to improve the adaptation of the Municipality of Murcia to Climate Change ', in 2017' Images for a resilient Murcia in 2030 'and in 2018' Adaptation Solutions for a Resilient Murcia 2030 '.
