The Science in Action international contest rewards the informative work of the UMU (08/10/2019)

In the delivery of these awards, which took place last October 6 in Alcoy, an Honorable Mention was awarded to the MasterChem scientific dissemination project, of the Unit of Scientific Culture and Innovation (UCC + I), a service of Vice-Rector for Quality, Culture and Communication of the University of Murcia (UMU), for "his innovative proposal to use a successful formula in television to bring chemistry to citizens," according to the jury.

MasterChem is a contest funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) with which chemistry moves to numerous educational centers in the Region of Murcia to encourage vocations and fight against chemophobia.

"This recognition supposes a support to the informative work that we have been developing in the UMU for a decade now," explains Delfina Roca, head of the UCC + I of the UMU, who points out that it has been a project led by the UCC + I but that would not have been possible without a magnificent work team among which are several professors of the UMU.

The first prize Ae Aequo for its conference 'Science, dissemination and life', on the importance of transferring scientific advances to the whole society, was awarded to the coordinator of the UCC + I and Professor of Biochemistry of the UMU José Manuel López Nicolás.

"This recognition is part of the conference I gave a few months ago at the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia. We are all very happy and these little things give us a lot of strength to move forward with our work," said López Nicolás.

In addition, other professors of the institution also received awards during this science festival that lasted for three days and ended with the award ceremony.

On the one hand, Professor of Applied Physics and one of the members of the MasterChem scientific committee, Rafa García Molina, received an Honorable Mention for the work 'Disseminate science in the 21st century' with which, together with researchers from the University of Alicante, approach the discipline of dissemination to scientists through training.

Finally, Professor Antonio Guirao received an Honorable Mention for his scientific demonstration 'We celebrate with physics the 50 years of the arrival of man on the Moon' for "the spectacular work of interdisciplinary, simple and attractive experiences, accompanied by models, photographs of epoch, etc. that explain us and remember the arrival of man on the moon ", according to the jury of this event.

A demonstration that also received the Agora stage award, given by the jury of students.

Murcia will be the new headquarters of Science in Action in 2020

During the event, the Vice-Rector for Quality, Culture and Communication of the UMU, Francisco Javier Martínez Méndez, announced that Murcia will be the next site of Science in Action 2020. The city will be responsible for organizing this international event, at the initiative of the Academy of the Sciences of the Region of Murcia and that will have the support of different institutions, among which is the City of Murcia and the UMU.

Science in Action is an international competition aimed at students, professors, researchers and disseminators of the scientific community, in any of its disciplines.

Its main objective is to present science in an attractive and motivating way, so that young people and the general public are interested in it.
