A course at the University of Murcia will allow to know the secrets of the San Esteban site (07/10/2019)

The University of Murcia will teach the 1st Archeology Course of the Arrabal de La Arrixaca, an initiative promoted by the City Council of Murcia, to publicize the scientific research carried out at the San Esteban site through conferences and guided visits, to be held from October 15 to March 3, 2020. The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta;

and Jorge Eiroa, professor at the University of Murcia and responsible for the excavations at the site, presented this Monday the details of this course.

The course is framed within the activities of the 'Phase 0 Project', the result of the agreement established between the University of Murcia and the City of Murcia, whose objective is to disseminate the historical wealth that houses the site.

The initiative has been jointly organized by the City Council and the Department of Prehistory, Archeology, Ancient History, Medieval History and Histographic Sciences and Techniques of the UMU.

Professor Jorge Eiroa has explained that this course has as its main audience the general public and comes to complete the dissemination in scientific forums specialized in medieval archeology that has been taking place so far.

"Those who complete the course completely will have an overview of what life could be like in the suburb of La Arrixaca," said Eiroa, who said that those who are only interested in specific conferences can attend without problems, since the course It is open and free, although to make it complete and to obtain a certificate of attendance registration is required.

The registration period is open and will end on October 14.

Those interested can formalize their registration through the Casiopea course management portal of the University of Murcia.

For students, historians and curious

The program involves the deployment of guided tours and conferences, which will address, among other topics, the conclusions of the archaeological intervention, medieval archeology, everyday objects found, diet and consumption of ancestors through the study of ceramics and glass, as well as the restoration of the archaeological site.

The course will bring together specialists who are carrying out different studies and analysis on the Archaeological Ensemble of San Esteban, from different academic centers such as the University of York, Newcastle University, University of Murcia, Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Autonomous University of Barcelona and University from the Basque Country, among others.

Students who register may apply for an accrediting diploma, having attended at least 80% of the sessions, which will correspond to the validation of 2 ECTS credits.

For their part, people interested in this topic can freely attend all conferences, without registering.

The course includes guided tours of the site and conferences, which will be held in the Assembly Hall of the Moneo Building (Murcia City Hall), on October 15 and 22, November 5 and 19, December 3 and 17, 4 and February 18, and March 3, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
