Murcia can learn all the secrets of the San Esteban site in the 1st Archeology Course of the suburb (07/10/2019)

The City Council, in collaboration with the University of Murcia, has promoted this initiative, which involves the deployment of conferences and free guided tours.

Most of the speakers who participated have visited and researched the Andalusian suburb 'in situ'.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, presented today the I Archeology Course of the Arrabal de La Arrixaca, in which the scientific research carried out at the San deposit will be announced They were through conferences and guided tours, which will be held from October 15 to March 3, 2020.

“There are many steps that the City Council has taken to reach this moment, so that Murcia and visitors can meet and enjoy the San Esteban site.

Since 2016, this municipal Corporation has taken the necessary measures to value the archaeological remains of the Andalusian suburb, carrying out more than thirty actions, promoting projects such as the Master Plan and developing initiatives to renovate the site's environment, â€he said. the mayor of Murcia.

The course, in particular, is an initiative framed within the activities of the 'Phase 0 Project', the result of the agreement established between the University of Murcia and the City of Murcia, whose objective is to spread the historical wealth that houses the site.

The initiative has been organized by the City Council in collaboration with the Department of Prehistory, Archeology, Ancient History, Medieval History, and Histographic Sciences and Techniques of the UMU.

The registration period, open from September 17, will end on October 9.

For students, historians and curious

The program involves the deployment of guided tours and conferences, which will address, among other topics, the conclusions of the archaeological intervention, medieval archeology, everyday objects found, diet and consumption of ancestors through the study of ceramics and glass, as well as the restoration of the archaeological site.

The course will bring together specialists who are carrying out different studies and analyzes on the Archaeological Ensemble of San Esteban, from different academic centers, such as the University of York, Newcastle University, University of Murcia, Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of the Basque Country ...

Students who register may apply for an accrediting diploma, having attended at least 80% of the sessions, which will correspond to the validation of 2 ECTS credits.

For their part, people interested in this topic can freely attend all conferences, without registering.

The course includes guided tours of the site and conferences, which will be held in the Assembly Hall of the Moneo Building (Murcia City Hall), on October 15 and 22, November 5 and 19, December 3 and 17, 4 and February 18, and March 3, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

List of actions to publicize the site

Recently, the winning project of the ideas contest convened by the Ministry of Development has been published to remodel the environment of the San Esteban deposit, which involves an investment of 17.3 million euros, assumed by 60% by the regional government and the Murcia City Council and 40% by the Ministry of Development.

To reach this point, the City Council has carried out more than thirty actions since 2016, among which the following stand out:

1) On July 26, 2016, the “Protocol of Action for joint action in the archaeological zone of San Esteban†was signed between the City Council of Murcia and the Autonomous Community of Murcia, a document that served to establish the bases and the channel through which to start the process.

2) In parallel, the City Council signed three collaboration agreements with the most representative associations and institutes in matters of cultural heritage recovery, such as Hispania Nostra, Santa María La Real Foundation and the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (IPCE), which assumed the status of External Observers.

3) On June 21, 2017, the visit to Murcia of the Messrs. Director and Deputy Director General of Architecture, Housing and Land took place, to which the general characteristics of the project could be explained in detail and agreed upon, as a result of said meeting that the City Council would propose before the Ministry of Development, in a formal way, a protocol proposal, in terms similar to those made between City Hall and the Autonomous Community, which contemplated the intervention of the State Administration. C

4) Once the Terms and Conditions were prepared, the City Council tendered the drafting of the Master Plan, being awarded a joint venture of multidisciplinary professionals.

The Advance Document of the Master Plan was approved by the Municipal Government Board dated July 7, 2017.

5) Since that date, an exhaustive consultation and citizen information phase has been carried out through specific consultations by sectors and public information.

6) On October 3, 2017, the first working meeting of the Advisory Committee of Experts, provided for in the Specification of Conditions, from which important conclusions were drawn.

The second meeting is scheduled to be held before the end of 2017.

7) On February 2, 2018, the “Initial Proposal of the Master Plan†document was approved, being favorably informed by the General Directorate of Culture, COAMU and other institutions.

Finally, the Master Plan was definitively approved by agreement of the Government Board dated June 15, 2018.

8) In a parallel way, the City Council has been carrying out urban renewal actions around the BIC site, creating a new pedestrian space that allows citizens to directly observe the said site, as a previous step and dissemination measure specifically recommended by The group of experts.

9) Progress has also been made following the recommendations of said group of experts and the DGBC of the CARM, in the drafting of a project called “Phase 0â€, approved by the City Council and currently in the bidding phase.

10) For this, the City of Murcia and the University of Murcia have signed the appropriate collaboration agreement under which, the UMU will direct and supervise the work of Phase 0, carrying out exhaustive work, both field and laboratory, aimed at consolidation, enhancement and documentation of the elements of archaeological value, work that is considered decisive for the future definition of the whole of the BIC.

11) To this end, a collaboration protocol was developed between City Hall and CARM, with the participation of the State Administration through the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, in charge of the corresponding project competition.

12) The draft review and diagnosis of the state of conservation, multidisciplinary study, adoption of consolidation measures and temporary exposure at the archaeological site of San Esteban on October 23, 2018 exceeded the process of the Contracting Bureau.

13) On April 3, 2019, the project competition with the intervention of a jury was published for the enhancement of the archaeological site of the Andalusian suburb of La Arrixaca and the San Esteban garden in Murcia.

14) On May 30, 2019, the mayor of Murcia José Ballesta, and the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, signed the second addendum to the collaboration agreement between both institutions for scientific research, training and enhancement of the San Esteban site.

15) On September 26, 2019, the resumption of visits to the San Esteban site is announced.

Visits will be held on weekdays, at 12 noon until December 10 and will last 45 minutes, with a maximum capacity of 35 people per day.

So far the site has received more than 2000 visits.

16) On October 3, 2019, the winner of the San Esteban intervention project is announced.
