The number of travelers visiting Murcia grows by 6% during the first eight months of 2019 compared to the previous year (04/10/2019)

This morning the Tourism Coordination Table has been set up, set up by the City Council in order to distinguish the city of Murcia as a reference tourist destination.

From January to August 2019, the municipality registered more than 315,000 travelers and 500,000 overnight stays.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, presided today the first meeting of the Tourism Coordination Board, which will strengthen the positioning of the Murcia Brand in the national and international tourism market, betting on the strategic projects that define the city.

“The destiny of Murcia is distinguished with unique and transformative projects based on the personality of our land;

projects that, in addition to offering cultural tourism, value our historical heritage, â€said the mayor of Murcia, who added that“ through the Tourism Coordination Board, we strengthen projects that rehabilitate the bright past of the city of Murcia, like that of the Wolf King and the recovery of the San Esteban site, revitalizing the splendid era of Medieval Murcia â€.

More than half a million overnight stays in 2019

Increasing the number of tourists in the municipality is another of the objectives proposed during the Coordination Table.

Specifically, from January to August 2019, the municipality registered a total of 315,686 travelers, of which 248,885 were residents in Spain and 66,801 residents abroad, representing a growth of 5.84% over the same period in 2018.

Likewise, the municipality registered 522,561 overnight stays during the first eight months of 2019, in which 386,708 were Spanish residents and 135,853 were foreign residents.

From January to August 2019, the average hotel occupancy rate in the municipality was 61%.

Coordination between councilors

The Tourism Coordination Board, coordinated by the Councilor for Employment, Economic Promotion and Tourism, Pedro García, and in which all the local government departments participate, has been created to promote the Murcia Brand through strategic projects, such as' Murcia Río ', the Plan de Acción de la Huerta, Smart City MiMurcia,' Murcia Medieval '- which values ​​the site of San Esteban, the historic site of Monteagudo and the wall of Santa Eulalia -, and the prison rehabilitation project Old woman.

Specifically, members of the local government highlighted the following projects as references of tourist interest:

-Smart City MiMurcia.

-Plan of Action of the Garden.

-Murcia Río.

-Accessibility plan in the field of tourism.

-Projects for the recovery of historical heritage, such as King Wolf and the recovery of the site of San Esteban and the Old Jail.

-Gastronomy, markets and Murcian commerce.

Consolidating the growth of the tourist influx and improving the competitiveness of the sector, as well as creating a specific work route to project Murcia as a reference tourist destination in the European Mediterranean Arc, are some of the topics discussed at the meeting.
