Parks and Gardens begins to crush the reeds extracted from the river after the DANA (03/10/2019)

It is carried out by means of a system known as 'mulching', which consists of crushing creating a layer in the upper part of the soil due to the decomposition of organic materials.

More than 1,000 cubic meters of reeds were removed from the river in more than 200 dump trucks.

"This measure has numerous advantages for gardens such as moisture conservation, water saving, soil improvement and visual appearance, respecting the 'green cycle' of nature and taking care of the environment," said Councilor José Guillén.

The Department of Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, directed by José Guillén, has begun to crush the reeds extracted from the river during the episode of heavy rains after the passage of DANA (Isolated Depression in High Levels) through the municipality of Murcia.

All the remains of bardomeras that were extracted from the channel will be passed through a crusher that is fed by personnel perfectly equipped with that of reducing those remains that will later be used in the green areas.

That crushing goes to a vehicle that moves it to the gardens of the municipality.

Specifically, the cane compression process is going to be carried out by means of a system known as 'mulching', which consists of crushing creating a mulch, that is, a layer on the top of the ground formed by the decomposition of organic matter

Mulching prevents evaporation and is distributed as compost on the ground providing nutrients.

"The remains of mulching contain a large amount of water, providing moisture to the green areas, which saves on irrigation and hydrates for longer," said Councilman José Guillén.

In addition, it provides 50% of the fertilizer and fertilization that the areas need, halving the need to provide nutrients independently.

This system crushes dried leaves and foliage remains, without the need to pick them up previously.

In short, "this measure has numerous advantages for gardens such as moisture conservation, water saving, soil improvement and visual appearance, respecting the 'green cycle' of nature and taking care of the environment," says the mayor.

In total, more than 1,000 cubic meters of reeds were removed in more than 200 dumps with container trucks.

"This action is a further commitment of the City Council for the circular economy by preventing a significant amount of organic matter and nutrients from going to landfill by incorporating them back into the soil for use by plants," concludes the councilor.

The City Council, through the Parks and Gardens Service of the Department of Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, was working during the DANA with twelve teams on the bridges of Murcia with the withdrawal of reeds to prevent the city from flooding.

These remains were deposited in a plot near La Fica.

Once dried, it has begun with its crushing and then reused as organic waste to the gardens of the municipality.
