More than 39 million seeds will repopulate the grasslands of Murcia and districts thanks to the 2019-2020 Resiembra Plan (01/10/2019)

These actions are carried out in a million square meters of grass distributed in more than one thousand green areas throughout the municipality.

The works involve repopulating the green areas where the grass is without force, yellowish or has disappeared. "The use of certain species of grass in cities contributes to saving water, since watering is maintained at its roots and distributed by the vegetation of the area, lowers the ambient temperature, reduces noise, helps reduce pollution and increases biodiversity, "said Councilman José Guillén.

The Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, presented this morning the 2019-2020 Restructuring Plan that will allow the planting of 39 million seeds in different green areas of Murcia and districts.

This initiative, which starts with the month of October, will involve repopulating those areas where the grass is without force, yellowish or has disappeared for various reasons such as the daily transit of people, animal droppings or various adverse weather conditions.

Several teams will be responsible for reseeding those areas where this action is most necessary.

The system that will be used is a motocultor machine that carries out the plowing of the land, after which recebo and peat are applied and so that these seeds grow quickly and give rise to a strong and green lawn.

It should be noted that the tendency in lawns is to use species of low water consumption and low maintenance, such as paspalum vaginatum, zoysia, etc.

Specifically, clarifies Guillén, it will act mainly in the area of the Glorieta, the Artillery Barracks or the Mariano Ballester Pintor Square, as well as in the districts of the municipality of Murcia where technicians deem necessary.

These works will be carried out by members of the Parks and Gardens concessionary company, STV-Actúa, which has previously made an analysis of the different green areas of the municipality of Murcia to know in which spaces or green areas a re-planting and improvement action is necessary.

“The use of certain species of grass in cities contributes to saving water, since when watering, the water is kept at its roots and distributed by the vegetation of the area, the ambient temperature decreases compared to a paved road or a soil without grass, reduces noise, helps reduce pollution and increases biodiversity, â€said Councilman José Guillén.

“The City Council is permanently committed to improving the environment, since a greener city is a city that is less polluted, cleaner and more respectful of people,†concludes the mayor.

Steps to follow for lawn reseeding

The most appropriate steps to do it correctly are the following:

• To start, clean the surface of weeds, that is, the remains of dried leaves and roots.

• Next, the ground must be removed and aerated to make sure that the water has not been drained badly or accumulated somewhere.

To do this, we can do it manually with a rake or mechanically with a motocultor.

The most recommended for this scarification process is that the earth be drilled to a depth of 15 cm.

• It is very advisable to add some organic fertilizer with plant components such as peat.

• After having done these three tasks, it is time to level the ground at the same height as the rest of the lawn.

• Once the land is prepared, it is time for reseeding.

They are planted according to the recommendations that come in their conditions of use to do it properly, the normal is 1kg of seed per 35 m2 (19,445 seeds / Kg approx).

• The planting of these seeds cannot be left unprotected.

These parts are covered with a layer of land of approximately 2 millimeters, so that the birds do not eat it.

You can also add a straw blanket to better feed the area and prevent these fertilizers from drying out.

• Subsequent maintenance is essential.

This land has to be sprayed or finely irrigated two or four times a day until the grass is seen.
