Francisco Esquembre Martínez, Professor of Mathematical Analysis of the UMU, and Félix J. García Clemente, Professor of Architecture and Computer Technology of the UMU, have been awarded the prestigious 'Excellence in Physics Education Award' awarded by the American Physical Society (APS) for "its sustained commitment to excellence in the teaching of physics".

This award recognizes the work of the professors of the University of Murcia within the framework of the 'Open Source Physics' project through a computer tool called 'Easy Java / Javascript Simulations' that is used for the creation of scientific simulations for computers, tablets and mobile devices that facilitate the learning of physics.

These are the first Spaniards to achieve this international recognition, which in previous years has been awarded to prestigious scientists such as Carl Wieman, professor at Stanford University and Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001, Edward F. Redish, professor at the University of Maryland, and David Sokoloff, professor at the University of Oregon.

This award joins other important awards achieved by the 'Open Source Physics' project, such as the 'Science Prize for Online Resources in Education (SPORE)' award granted by the journal Science in 2011, the 'Excellence Award for a Multimedia Resource' 'of the European Association' Multimedia in Physics Teaching and Learning ', in 2015, and the UNESCO King Al-Khalifa award, for the use of information technologies in education, also in 2015.

The award ceremony will take place in Washington DC, during the meeting of the American Physical Society next April 2020.

The American Physical Society is the second largest physics society in the world.

It was founded on May 20, 1899 and currently has 47 units dedicated to various plots of physics.
