Murcia celebrates the First Week of the Major with different cultural and leisure activities and several intergenerational meetings (27/09/2019)

The Department of Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation joins the international celebration of the elderly, which will take place on October 1, with extensive programming that will take place from Friday to October 13 in the municipality

Recognizing the work of the elderly, transmitting a real and positive image of old age and promoting active and healthy aging are some of the priority objectives of the Department of Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation that, this year, will put in March the First Week of the Elderly, coinciding with the celebration on October 1 of the International Day of Older Persons under the theme "Journey towards equal age."

The Councilor responsible Paqui Pérez explained that "with this week dedicated to the elderly we want to pay tribute to his enormous work over the years and promote coexistence between generations and their participation in society, because they are fundamental."

Theatrical visit

The First Week of the Major will be held from Friday to October 13.

The first of the activities, organized jointly with the Department of Employment, Economic Promotion and Tourism led by Councilman Pedro García Rex, is scheduled for this afternoon, at 17.30, with the completion of a theatrical visit by the Visitor Center La Muralla from Santa Eulalia;

and a sample of medieval instruments reproduced from the Cantigas de Alfonso X belonging to a particular collection.

The institutional act in recognition of the elderly will be on Tuesday, October 1, at 12 noon, in the Plenary Hall of the City of Murcia.

In the afternoon, from 17.00 to 20.00, the II ANAEDE National Forum "Breaking Myths" will begin, which will take place in the Assembly Hall of the Cajamurcia Foundation.

Intergenerational Encounters

Likewise, during the First Week of the Major, two Intergenerational Meetings will be held, one on day 2, from 12.00 to 14.00, in the social center of Mayores de San Antón;

and the other on day 3, from 12.00 to 14.00, in the CEIP Maestro José Castaño.

Both conferences are organized by the Federation of Neighborhood Associations with the sponsorship of the Department of Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation, and will be led by the psychogerontologist, Pablo Hernández García.

On day 3 in the afternoon there will be a guided cultural tour of the "Muslim Murcia from a gender perspective" in Las Claras and from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Senior Centers

In parallel to this program, the social centers for the elderly in the municipality have launched various cultural and leisure activities to commemorate the International Day of the Elderly that ends on October 13.

"Our elders deserve all our respect and admiration, with these activities and other relevant measures we are promoting from the Department we want to transmit a real and positive image of aging, boost their participation and partnership and promote policies for active, productive and healthy aging ", Councilwoman Paqui said.
