The University of Murcia presents its ODSessions project in New York (25/09/2019)

The University of Murcia (UMU) participated for the first time in the International Conference on Sustainable Development, which celebrates its seventh edition from September 23 to 26 at Columbia University, based in New York.

The Vice Chancellor for Social Responsibility and Transparency of the UMU, Longinos Marín, presented the ODSesiones project, whose purpose is the fulfillment and development of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN in the 2030 Agenda.

In a paper moderated by the tenured professor of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and director of the Royal Harlu Complutense College, Julio Lumbreras, Marín presented the paper 'The role of the university in the SDGs'.

In his talk, he explained that ODSessions "places the university as an engine of change for the awareness, awareness and transformation of society, in the hands of companies and the third sector."

Good practices

This initiative aroused the interest of the auditorium, formed by professionals from the private sector, political representatives, members of the university community and civil society.

In this way, the UMU has been represented for the first time at this annual world summit, whose theme of 2019 has been 'Good practices: models, partnerships and capacity building for the SDGs'.

Renowned world leaders, scientists and businessmen attended the event, including the participation of the director of the Sustaintable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Professor of Sustainable Development at Columbia University, Jeffrey Sachs.

In fact, the renowned American economist did not hesitate to photograph himself with Longinos Marín in a corporate shirt with the motto "ODSesionadas".

Sachs is one of the most reputed voices on the planet in terms of sustainable development, and was appointed by the then UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, as an advisor to plan the SDGs for his organization.

In addition to Sachs, the IMF managing director, David Lipton, participated in this world conference;

or the vice president of the 3M multinational, Gayle Schueller.

The objective of these days has been threefold: to evaluate the progress in the objectives of climate change, to address the new ways of financing and to reflect on the emerging challenges of the SDGs.

A thousand attendees

The conference, jointly organized by the Center for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Columbia University, has brought together more than 1,000 people.

"The great economic, social and environmental challenges facing today's society require a disruptive innovation that allows them to be addressed in a revolutionary and transformative way, capable of directing the planet towards a more sustainable future," Longinos Marín explained.

In his opinion, "it is up to the university to sensitize, raise awareness and promote that innovation to achieve change towards a more sustainable, smarter and more environmentally friendly economy."

SDG 5 arrives: Equality

From January 2019 to April 2021, the UMU ODSessions project dedicates each month to disseminating and organizing activities about each of the 17 SDGs.

The SDG 5 campaign, dedicated to Equality, will start on October 2, 2019 through an act in the Plaza of the University of Murcia - next to the La Merced campus.
