The City Council begins its transition to the Circular Economy through the European CityLoops project (22/09/2019)

The City of Murcia will participate in the CityLoops project, funded by the H2020 program of the European Commission.

The Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, directed by Mercedes Bernabé, is responsible for directing this project, whose objective is to develop, implement and replicate a series of innovative urban planning strategies and instruments, focused on the transition to a circular economy, in reference to organic waste (OW) and demolition and construction waste (CDW).

The project has 28 partners from eight countries, such as Spain, Holland, Norway, Finland, Portugal, Italy, Denmark and Brussels.

It is divided into eight work packages, among which the City of Murcia, with a budget of 60,787 euros, will collaborate in two.

On the one hand, the session will participate in the work described in package 1, specifically in the monitoring and supervision of the project, as well as communication between partners.

The duration of this task is 48 months, where the City Council will involve a municipal engineer.

Package 7 includes drafting of a 'Replication Plan', where the potential of the municipality in the area of ​​circular economy will be analyzed, replicating the measures studied in this project.

This project is expected to reduce the consumption of material and natural resources in urban spaces, increase the capacity for urban regeneration due to knowledge of material and natural resources, as well as the implementation of social, environmental, geospatial and economic indicators to monitor and evaluate the urban circular and regenerative capacity.

Investing in innovation in the field of Circular Economy is another of the proposals that are expected to be achieved with the collaboration of the City of Murcia in CityLoops.

Likewise, the implementation of the Circular Economy Action Plan of the European Union, as well as the commitment of the new Urban Agenda in relation to a transition towards a circular economy.

Participation in the CityLoops project will last four years from the signing of the grant contract.
