A Murcian mulberry tree, planted by the UMU Professor Consuelo Ãlvarez, recalls emigration in the Asturian town of Langreo (09/09/2019)

When María Consuelo Álvarez Morán was asked by the Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Murcia, to choose a tree to symbolize her migration to the Region of Murcia for three and a half decades, she did not hesitate: a mulberry tree, one of the most traditional trees in our province without a doubt, which enabled the important silk industry in Murcia for centuries.

The initiative was part of the events of the Langreanos Association in the World, which, for 16 years, has been celebrating activities every month of September in memory of its illustrious countrymen emigrated to other places.

There are 16 trees, which from various parts of the world, have been planted by Langreanos who marched outside their land in the parks of Felguera and Sama, in Langreo.

In the case of María Consuelo Álvarez Morán, who left the Asturian town almost half a century ago -36 of those years has spent them as a professor at the University of Murcia-, the initiative had a special flavor, since the park of Sama, the place where the mulberry tree from Murcia planted last Thursday, September 5, was the "playground of my recesses".

For Álvarez Morán "it is an honor to plant a mulberry tree with the roots of Murcia in my homeland, in the marvelous and centennial Golden Park of Sama de Langreo, which was the place of my walks since I was a baby, which was also the playground of games from my school of the Dominican Sisters, which is on its side, and the place where we 'refreshed', that is, we saw the 'soft drinks', which is what Langreo calls the first adolescent loves. "

The city of Murcia gave a morus nigra for the event, which has been planted in an emblematic place: the music kiosk.

The Professor affirms that "For me it was an honor and an act of recognition to those who by various avatars live outside of Sama."

"The tree affirms - it is dedicated to the memory of my parents, Pepe and Obdulia, who met in Sama, walked around in that park, danced there to the sound of music and then took me to play there."
