´Come to the Fair by the river´ (05/09/2019)

Cyclists, skaters and 'runners' premiere the new route on the left bank of' Murcia Ro ', which opens coinciding with the start of the Murcia Fair 2019. The new route has been marked with the informative posters' Come to the Fair by the river ', which collect the estimated journey time between the Malecon and La Fica on foot (15 minutes), by bike (5 minutes), and by solar boat (17 minutes).

The new left mota has a bike lane and a pedestrian path of 10,500m2 and almost 2 kilometers in length.

Cyclists, skaters and 'runners' have released this morning the new route on the left bank of 'Murcia Ro', in a playful race whose departure has been the mayor of Murcia, Jos Ballesta, accompanied by members of the Municipal Corporation.

The 10,500 m2 of this new environment are made available to all Murcia coinciding with the beginning of the September Fair and the descent of the Virgen de la Fuensanta, which will leave this afternoon, at 3.30 pm, from its Sanctuary in the mountains and will arrive in El Carmen at around 7.30pm.

The new route has been marked with the informative posters 'Come to the Fair by the river', which collect the estimated journey time between the Malecon and La Fica in the different forms of sustainable transport: on foot (15 minutes), by bike (5 minutes), and by solar boat (17 minutes).

The posters have been installed next to the Manterola catwalk and in front of Reina Sofa.

“The opening of this natural space, which crosses the heart of the city, is the culmination of the first phase of the 'Murcia Ro' transformation project, whereby Segura has regained its centrality and prominence, so that Murcia will return to look proud at our river, the backbone that gave rise to our city, ”said Jos Ballesta.

"An extension of more than 50,000m2 of green areas and naturalized spaces framed within the 'Murcia Ro' project has already been opened to Murcia, recreating the Huerta and recovering the riverside vegetation," said the mayor of Murcia.

The new speck has a bike lane and a pedestrian promenade in different spaces and has also been revegeted with native trees and shrubs.

Specifically, 160 new trees have been planted on the left bank, among poplars, elms and clams that, together with numerous shrubs, form naturalized walks that accompany the flow of the river, surrounded by native nature.

On the left bank, the works have been carried out with an investment of 500,000 euros, in an execution period of four months.

The works have been co-financed by 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (Feder), within the framework of the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Strategy.

Connection with Beniel and La Contraparada

The left bank houses two exclusive lanes for bicycles and pedestrians, almost 2 kilometers long, respectively, which establish a new connection between the city and the Huerta, surrounded by riverside vegetation.

Both the lane for the exclusive use of bicycles and the pedestrian path, differentiated with a yellow hue, have a length of 1,900 kilometers.

In this way, the left bank of the river walk connects the bike lane and the path that runs to Vega Baja, to Beniel, with that of La Contraparada.

160 new trees, among poplars, elms and clams

As noted, 160 new trees have been planted on the left bank, including poplars (50), elms (40) and almeces (70), in addition to more than 3,200 riverside shrubs of different species and sizes;

vegetation that is next to the channeling wall to provide areas of shade to the bike lane and the pedestrian promenade, and in the planter attached to the jetty that protects the speck.

All proposed plant species are native and typical of the Segura riverbank.

Likewise, access from the mote to the 6 stairs that access the river has been paved with porcelain stoneware tiles, improving accessibility and inviting Murcia to stroll through the Segura environment.

In addition, the City Council plans to rehabilitate the stairs in a subsequent action.
