Thanks to the project of the UCAM and the Spanish Olympic Committee for tutoring for elite athletes.

The goal, the success, the podium and the taste of victory in elite sport have left us countless moments to remember.

One of them was the triumph of Gerard Descarrega (Reus, 1994), when he won the gold in the Paralympic Games of Rio 16. Now, his success has come in the academic field, to graduate in Psychology from the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) ).

Instead of a medal, this time he has received the purple scholarship, the color of his degree, and the diploma.

They are the symbols of several years of effort and sacrifice for having to combine your workouts, trips and competitions with notes, practices and exams.

All this, scratching hours at the clock and overcoming the barriers that blindness impose, but that at no time has prevented him from taking his career and continue being a high level athlete.

As in Rio 16, now at UCAM, Descarrega once again enjoys the feeling of having achieved success: "It's different, because in sports you can make the most effort and in the end you can win another. To the maximum, you are the one who gets the results, both successes are a pride, but the sensations are different ".

What the athlete is clear about is that the work carried out by the Catholic University has been key in the opportunity he has had: "I am very grateful to the UCAM and its faculty, it is a pleasure to be part of this university, because it has given me the opportunity to combine my sports career with Psychology studies ".

He is grateful for the work of Juan Flores, his sports tutor: "It has been key, because it has helped me to organize myself to contact all the teachers and adapt a lot of material, since I was one of the first blind students of this race, and there was a lot of material I had images in text that are not compatible with the adapted computer that I use, Juan has been my link with the degree and with which I have been most in touch.

And just now, as if it were a coach, talk to your tutor to plan the next academic challenge, "since I want to do a master's degree, my career continues and I want to continue taking this opportunity that UCAM gives me to train" .

Training and specialization are essential to have more opportunities in the labor market, and Gerard is already considering his preferences: "I have several options, I like sports psychology, since sport is the field that I know best, but I am also interested in it. Clinical psychology, they are two totally different worlds, so I still have to think a lot about where I venture. "

As it is decided, on the horizon its next great sporting challenge, Tokyo 2020, is drawn: "We have the World Championship in November, in Dubai, and there we will be able to qualify for the Games, which is the main objective. and it is only disputed every four years, so we are already looking forward to fighting for Paralympic gold again ".
