SEMAS intensifies the attention at noon and in the afternoon to the homeless in the heat alert. (26/06/2019)

The objective is to alleviate the physical consequences of exposure to high temperatures, providing water and caps, transfer or accompaniment to the day center.

The Municipal Home Telecare Service also activates the 'Plan of measures against extreme temperatures' between June 1 and September 15, which involves special surveillance of 1,250 elderly people especially vulnerable to prevent the harmful effects of heat on health .

The team of the Mobile Social Service Emergency Service (SEMAS) and the Municipal Tele-Assistance Service, dependent on the Department of Social Rights and Family, directed by Pilar Torres, have intensified attention to people at risk of social exclusion and in street situation, as well as the elderly, in order to alleviate the physical consequences of exposure to heat.

The device launched in the heat alert of the next few days provides people who are on the road with water, food, hats, transfer or accompaniment to the day center of Jesus Abandoned.

The SEMAS carries out a special follow-up around noon and in the afternoon, to avoid the effects that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can have on health.

They carry out their work in teams of two people, made up of a social worker and a local policeman, attending to the most at risk citizens, who are provided with relevant hydration media, while they are informed about the strategies that can be applied. Adopt to reduce the impact of heat on your body.

They are also informed about the different municipal social resources at their disposal.

Home telecare device

On the other hand, between June and September, a specific plan of measures is activated through the Municipal Home Telecare Service, managed by Tunstall televida.

Of the 2,929 users who receive the usual service, 1,253 have some kind of risk that makes them especially vulnerable, which means 42.48% of the people served.

Of these, 8 are in level 3 (maximum risk), 981 in the medium level and 264 in low risk, according to the indicators established by the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

The device, made up of 51 people, was activated on June 1 and will remain in operation until September 15.

So far, AEMET has not activated the alert and from the service of fabrics has not been managed any incidence associated with high temperatures.

During the validity of the protocol during 2018, the AEMET activated on 10 occasions some level of alert in the municipality of Murcia, 9 of them yellow and 1 orange.

During this period, 8,130 control calls were made from the central and 2,172 visits.

Two cases related to the effects of heat were detected, mobilizing in each case the relevant resources (Mobile Unit, Health Center and / or Emergency Service).

In one of the cases, after being assessed by the emergency department, she needed to be transferred to a hospital.

Protection and tranquility

"The objective of this device is that the high temperatures of the summer months in Murcia do not cause more problems for the elderly, who are more vulnerable due to their age, degree of dependence, isolation and associated chronic diseases," explains Pilar Torres, who highlights that in addition to providing protection for users, the telecare service also provides peace of mind for them and their families.

In order to detect any emergency situation in users who have some kind of vulnerability, the City of Murcia has installed 1,666 security devices and 52 mobile telecare services, which allow to continue enjoying this service outside your home.
