Official reception to the athletes who will represent the University of Murcia in the Universiade and the European Championships this summer (21/06/2019)

This midday has taken place in the Rector of the UMU the act of official reception and presentation of the athletes who will represent the University of Murcia at the Universidade Napoli 2019 and the European Championships in women's football and women's judo.

The University of Murcia will compete in the XXX Universiade (the university Olympiad) of Naples 2019, which will be held from July 3 to 14, in three different sports: Olympic Shooting, Sailing and Taekwondo.

It has also made the official reception of the team of the University of Murcia that won the bronze medal in the Championship of Spain female football, and will compete in the European University Championship of this sport, to celebrate in the city of Braga between July 15 and 23.

In the same act, the official reception was given to UMU judo athlete, María Ángeles López Aguilera, recent champion of Spain, whose European university championship will be held in the city of Zagreb between July 31 and March 3. August.

The event was chaired by the Rector José Luján;

the Vice-Rector of Students and Services to the University Community, Paloma Sobrado Calvo;

the General Director of Sports of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia Alonso Gómez López, and the UMU sports coordinator José María López Gullón.

Sport as a source of healthy life

The Vice-Rector Paloma Sobrado has commented in the act that the UMU "promotes sports among its students and workers as a source of health and healthy living", but also encourages competition as a means to develop physical, mental and social skills, and qualities so admirable as loyalty, cooperation, perseverance ... ", and added that" we are proud that our students participate in competitions taking the name of our university to different countries. "

For its part, the UMU Sports Coordinator highlighted the magnificent results achieved by these students in different championships, stating that "the University of Murcia enjoys a high level of sports".

López Agullón has encouraged to offer a few words on behalf of his teammates to three of the athletes: Rafael de la Hoz Tuells, two-time Spanish sailing champion and second in the absolute world in 2015;

María Teresa Mateo González, captain of the women's indoor soccer team, European champion with the senior team, and María Ángeles López Aguilera, two-time champion of Spain junior and absolute national vice-champion.

All of them agreed on a firm purpose: to make a good paper representing the University of Murcia in the different championships in which they will participate this summer.

The event was closed by General Sports Director Alonso Gómez López, who encouraged the athletes to feel proud for representing the University of Murcia, the Region and Spain, and Rector José Luján, who stated that "we are very proud of you. with you and your work ", adding that" sporting activity is essential for the integral growth of people ".
