Agriculture, water and technology

Agriculture is a fundamental tool for the food security of a population that will reach 8,600 million people by 2030 and 9,800 million by 2050, according to United Nations data.

It is also a fundamental engine for economic development.

In 2014, the World Bank noted that agriculture accounted for one third of world GDP.

This agriculture that generates food security and economic prosperity depends directly on the availability of water.

In arid and semi-arid areas, such as Spain, irrigated agriculture plays a fundamental role and its management is key to its good productivity.

In times of digital revolution, technology has transformed the measurement, management and use of water in agriculture in recent years.

The commitment to research, development and innovation is historic in these areas from the public and private sectors.

However, agriculture continues to be the largest user of water, accounting for two thirds of total demand.

It is necessary to continue with the transformation of the classic irrigation systems by others that provide greater efficiency.

For its part, the governance of water for the primary sector continues to be at the center of the debate between the different levels of Public Administrations, the users and the different entities that participate in the sector.

Communication is one of the main battle horses, irrigation should make use of it to value its economic, social and environmental benefits.
