The façade of the Annex Building of the City Hall will light up blue tomorrow to commemorate World Refugee Day, responding to a request sent by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The City Council joins this initiative that is celebrated in 128 countries that decide to add this tribute to the refugees by dyeing their most emblematic buildings and monuments of the blue color of the United Nations, which symbolizes the sky that unites all nations and is the color of the UN flag, as well as the color of UNHCR.

Among the global icons that have participated in this initiative are the Empire State Bulding in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome, the CN Tower in Toronto, the Tokyo Tower or the Ericsson Globen Arena in Stockholm, which is The largest spherical building in the world.

Since 2013, during the night of June 19 to 20, several Spanish cities have been adding to this initiative and have dyed their most emblematic buildings blue, such as the Puerta de Alcalá and the Cibeles fountain in Madrid, the building of the General Assembly of the Principality in Asturias, the municipalities of Murcia, Pamplona, Toledo, Ciudad Real and Albacete, the Hanging Houses of Cuenca, the Church of San Ginés in Guadalajara and the Ibaigane Palace, home of Athletic Club de Fútbol, located in the center of Bilbao.

The lighting in blue becomes in this way a sample of the solidarity of cities with refugees and provides a strong visual element to attract the attention of the population and sensitize society about the situation of more than 65 million of people who have been forced to move because of war, violence and human rights violations.
