The values ​​of Spanish sport shine in the UCAM (04/06/2019)

José Luis Mendoza announces the creation of the International Chair of Integrity in Sports and Joel González, double Olympic medalist, will be its director

The Catholic University of Murcia has established itself on the international scene as 'the University of Sport' and every June it shows it with its gala that closes the sports course in which the best are rewarded.

This year there was much to celebrate, highlighting the record in the Championship of University Spain with 141 medals: 86 gold, 40 silver and 15 bronze.

For this reason, the wide sports family of the UCAM has met in the Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos to put the finishing touch to a dream season.

From the youngest of the bases of the different teams of the university or linked to it, to the professional and elite athletes, more than 800 people have vibrated with a gala that has not missed some of the great stars of the sport UCAM , like Mireia Belmonte, Joel González or Ana Carrasco.

The event was chaired by José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM, and Alejandro Blanco, president of the Spanish Olympic Committee.

The alliance between both institutions has been key to the launching of the academic and sports project of the Catholic University that allows athletes to continue competing and training at the highest level without leaving higher education.

For José Luis Mendoza it is a joy to see how the project has materialized because "it is a task of service to the only athlete in the world that we have together with the Spanish Olympic Committee." Without Alejandro Blanco this would be impossible and thanks to him we are getting that the athletes study and take forward their careers so that tomorrow they can enter the labor market, some of them even working with us in the university ".

Alejandro Blanco stressed that "there is no university in the world that has so many athletes, so many different sports and so much quality, it is a luxury for Spanish sport to have such strong support from UCAM. society with its effort and its successes and it is very important that these are transferred to society, we want to work together with the UCAM for a Spain with values ​​and without complexes ".

During the Gala awards were given to the best of the course but also paid tribute to two great athletes who recently announced their retirement: tennis player Nico Almagro and UCAM Murcia BC captain, José Ángel Antelo.

From this gala, the athletes face a summer full of international competitions in which many of them will start playing the ticket for the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020.

A chair for athletes

One of the news of the day was offered by the president of the UCAM when he announced the creation of an International Chair of Integrity in Sport with the Spanish Olympic Committee with the aim of "investigating in this field and fighting against everything that messed up sport. like the matches of matches ".

In addition, said that chair will be led by Joel Gonzalez, double Olympic taekwondo medalist who is currently doing his doctoral thesis at the UCAM on the detection of football match-fixing through sports betting.

The athlete currently shares his doctoral academic goal with the dream of participating in his third Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
