Countdown to the reopening of the Artillery Barracks as a space of reference for the Murcian culture (04/06/2019)

José Ballesta: "It will open its doors this July as a new cultural symbol of the city of Murcia, an open, bright and participatory space for the creation, dissemination and promotion of Murcian artistic talent."

Pavilions 1 and 2 add more than 5,200 m2 and its rehabilitation and complete structural reinforcement has involved an investment of more than 3 million euros.

The acting mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs in office, Jesús Pacheco, visited the rehabilitation works that are being finalized in pavilions 1 and 2 of the Artillery Barracks, which will reopen their doors this month of July as a space of reference for the creation, development, dissemination and promotion of culture.

José Ballesta said that "next year the Artillery Barracks will be 100 years old.

These facilities will become a new cultural symbol of the city of Murcia, an open, bright and participatory space, which will have a clear cultural orientation, incorporating a reference center for the creation, development, dissemination and promotion of artistic talent Murcia ".

"Murcia lives an unprecedented cultural effervescence.

For that reason, our Cultural Model, which has been endorsed by the Murcians, proposes the creation of artistic residences open to young creators, giving them certain public spaces, such as the Old Prison or the Artillery Barracks;

places that will become centers of cultural creation and where not only can develop their creativity but also expose their works and cultivate their talent with national and international creators, "explained José Ballesta, who added that" we want Murcia to be the capital of culture , a city of production of artists and a place where to come to create, to produce and to exchange ".

More than 5,200 m2 of cultural equipment

In total there are more than 5,200 m2 of space distributed between the two pavilions, which have both ground floor and two heights;

an extensive space dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of cultural events, enabling a first-class cultural facility that favors artistic creativity throughout the municipality.

The works began at the end of July 2018 and have been developed over a whole year.

To date, the structural reinforcement carried out in both pavilions has been completed, 95% of the original facades of both buildings have been restored, the exterior carpentry has been replaced by 90%, the rehabilitation has been completed 100% of the balconies, and the installations are executed in a 70% (electricity, fire-fighting, air conditioning ...).

The only thing missing is the painting of floors, some finishes and the cleaning tasks to finish the work.

In addition, an elevator has been installed to create an itinerary that guarantees universal accessibility.

An investment of 3 million euros

The works have involved an overall investment of 3,148,264 euros (1.7 million in Hall 1 and 1.4 million in Hall 2), and have been co-financed by 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) within the framework of the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Strategy.

Restoration of the original facade and details of Moorish inspiration

In both pavilions the facades have been restored, (conserving their original materials, ornamentation, carpentry and holes), paying special attention to the moldings and azulejos tiles of Moorish inspiration.

At present, the Artillery Barracks enclosure houses the Rio Segura Municipal Library, the UMU Museum and Aquarium, the Professional Conservatory or the Cendeac and Párraga centers.
