The City Council and the UMU extend the excavations at the San Esteban site and resume the guided tours (30/05/2019)

José Ballesta and José Luján sign the second addendum to the agreement for scientific research, training and enhancement of the San Esteban deposit.

More than 2,000 people have already traveled to the Andalusian suburb in the guided tours, which will be resumed on June 15 in the afternoon / evening.

After the lab work, archaeologists will re-enter the site in September and continue their research until the spring of 2020. Ballesta: "A fortnight of architecture studios have visited the site in May to finalize their offer to the project contest of the Ministry of Public Works, whose term ends on July 5 ".

The acting mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, signed this morning the second addendum to the collaboration agreement between both institutions for scientific research, training and enhancement of the San Esteban deposit .

"This is a collaboration that we started a little over a year ago and that has meant the opening and social recovery of San Esteban for Murcia and the entry of specialized archaeologists in this space, which is a source of knowledge of the history of Murcia and a valuable heritage of Murcia, which is part of our collective memory, "said José Ballesta.

By virtue of this alliance between the Murcia Consistory and the UMU, the visits to the Andalusian suburb will be resumed as of June 15 in the afternoon / evening, at 8:00 p.m.

"More than 2,000 people have already passed through this medieval network and toured the streets of Murcia in the XII-XIII century, being direct witnesses of the excavations of Phase 0 of the team of researchers of the UMU", said the Murcian councilor.

Currently, the laboratory phase is in full development, that is, the remains found in the excavations are being analyzed (Carbon 14 analytics that allow to specify the chronology of the bones found in the cemetery, Mitochondrial DNA studies to define possible relationships between kinship, analysis of stable isotopes on bone remains, to define the diet of the inhabitants of the Arrabal, etc.).

Archaeologists resume excavations in September

Next September archaeologists will re-enter the site and will continue and expand their research until the spring of 2020, which will allow deepening in Precincts I and II, as well as expanding the excavation area in the cemetery.

"San Esteban has made it possible to establish a dialogue between the people of the XXI century and our ancestors of the Medieval era, thanks to the collaboration of the University of Murcia, a reference institution in scientific research and knowledge transfer, which provides the archaeological methodology for the development of the works, "said José Ballesta.

Tenderers have already visited the deposit

On the other hand, José Ballesta recalled that "in just over a month, on July 5, the deadline for the presentation of the teams that will compete in the project competition with jury intervention, convened by the Ministry of Development, ends for the enhancement of the archaeological site of the Andalusian settlement of La Arrixaca and the garden of San Esteban in Murcia.

The mayor reported that "a fortnight of national and international architecture studios have visited the site in May to contemplate the space on site, resolve doubts and specify their offer to the contest."

This contest, fruit of the agreement between the Government of Spain, Autonomous Community and the City Council, establishes works below ground, that is to say, the musealization of the site, and works on ground, which will involve the recovery of the Plaza de San Esteban as an open public space, compatibilizing both spaces.

In this way, along its 24,000 m2, the environment of San Esteban will be configured as a focus of cultural and tourist attraction unique in our country.

15 million investment and 18 months of work

The material execution budget estimated by the Ministry of Development for the investment object of this action is 15 million euros.

The State will contribute 40% of the financing, while the regional government and Murcia City Council will pay the remaining 60% in equal parts.

Once the project has been drafted, the term of execution of the work itself will be 18 months from the moment in which the act of setting out is signed.
