The UCAM returns to beat the record of medals in the University Spanish Championships (29/05/2019)

Since 2012, UCAM has been dominating the medal of Spanish university sports.

The commitment of the Catholic University of Murcia by athletes so that they can combine their studies with their training and competitions has attracted much of the Spanish sporting talent and that is reflected in the sporting results.

One year more than 100 medals have been surpassed and the record of medals achieved last year (140) has been broken, dominating from start to finish in the medals table: 141 medals (86 gold, 40 silver and 15 bronze).

In second place has been the University of Valencia with 67 medals (19 gold, 18 silver and 30 bronze), and third, the University of Barcelona that has achieved 27 medals (7 gold, 9 silver and 11 made of bronze).

This year the organizational weight of the Spanish University Championships has fallen on the universities of the Valencian Community that have hosted almost all competitions.

The hegemony of the UCAM and the highest number of medals conquered has come again from the hand of swimming and athletics.

In the swimming pool, the swimmers of La Católica got 44 metals with the stellar performances of Alberto Lozano (7 golds), Melani Costa (6 golds and 2 silver), José Antonio Marí (4 golds) and Sarai Gascón (4 golds).

In athletics the results were also magnificent with 26 medals: 13 golds, 10 silvers and 3 bronzes.

Among the participants, María Pérez (current 20-km European champion), Fernando Carro (European runner-up of 3,000 obstacles) and Jorge Ureña (European champion of heptalón in indoor track) stood out.

Other sports, which traditionally are very well given to athletes UCAM, have not failed either this time: karate (ten medals, with the participation of the world No. 1 Sandra Sanchez), badminton (six golds, including the Olympic Pablo Abián) or tennis (five medals, counting the conquered by Tita Torró).

In team sports great victories have also been obtained: basketball (female and male gold), volleyball (female gold and male silver), indoor soccer (male gold) and handball (female bronze).

In the 141 medals achieved by the UCAM, a total of 244 athletes participated, which gives an idea of the Catholic's sporting potential.

They are eight consecutive years in front of the Spanish university sport, with much difference on the rest of universities.

It is not something that has been achieved from one day to the next, it is the result of the work of many years, of a university structure that follows the model of the great universities of the United States so that the sport is part of the life of the campus and is the result of the commitment of the institution to support athletes so that they do not give up their studies for pursuing their sporting dreams.
