'Science against blindness' with Pablo Artal in a conference at the University of Murcia (24/05/2019)

The Unit of Scientific Culture (UCC) of the University of Murcia (UMU) returns with its cycle of informative conferences in the Room of Cultural Scope of the English Cut.

On Monday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m., Professor of Optics at the University of Murcia, Pablo Artal Soriano, will be in charge of bringing science closer to the public with his talk 'Science against blindness'.

Through this conference, the expert will take a historical tour of the scientific advances that have allowed to cure visual diseases that were the cause of blindness in the past, such as cataracts.

In addition, it will talk about those in which the specialists continue working to be able to solve.

The speaker believes that "there is a light at the end of the tunnel for devastating diseases of the retina combining multidisciplinary science and technology" and he hopes that "in the near future we will be able to overcome blindness".

About the speaker

Artal Soriano is a pioneer in the development of advances in the study of eye optics and several of his ideas have been introduced in instruments that are currently used.

Likewise, some of its proposals for optical correction are put into clinical practice for the benefit of patients throughout the world.

The professor studied Physical Sciences at the University of Zaragoza and received his doctorate at the Complutense University of Madrid.

Subsequently he studied at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and at the Institut d'Optique in Orsay in France.

He was a scientist at the Institute of Optics of the CSIC in Madrid until 1994 when he joined the Optics Laboratory at the University of Murcia, where he also founded and directed the Optics Laboratory.

He has published more than 200 research articles, directed 25 doctoral theses, has been a mentor of dozens of investigations and has 25 international patents.

In addition, he collaborates in numerous research laboratories in Europe, Asia, the United States and Australia and is a distinguished visiting professor at Central South University in Changsha, China.
