The University of Murcia celebrates the First Scientific School Congress on Agroecology and Food Sustainability between May 21 and 22 at the Veterinary School and on May 24 at the University Social Center.

In this congress students of all educational levels will present the projects they have developed related to the conservation of species recovering local varieties and autochthonous races;

in addition to the projects carried out to recover the biocultural memory of the peasant and huertana population, and the intergenerational gardens in school environments.

The congress, whose youngest congressmen are six years old, presents 18 scientific works, 11 of which correspond to Infant and Primary schools, six to Secondary schools and one to Vocational Training.

Four posters will also be exhibited.

Thanks to the development of these projects, some 50 varieties have been recovered, some of great interest, such as the Sierra Espuña chickpea, the long snap bean, the purple corn or the chirigaita squash.

Also numerous traditional recipes almost forgotten as rice with tripe from Calasparra.

For a few months, students between 6 and 17 years old have left the classrooms, interviewed their relatives and neighbors, have taken photographs and videos.

Likewise, many of them have entered the classrooms to tell the students experiences related to life in the countryside, in the garden, with culinary culture.

The students who have participated in this project have acquired knowledge about the past and present of the historical agrarian territories.

The results obtained by the students of the CEIP will be presented on Tuesday, May 21, while those of the IES and FP will be presented on Wednesday 22. For Friday the 24th a Biodiversity Fair has been organized in the University Social Center with the exhibition and exchange of seeds among the educational centers, a market with products of school gardens and workshops on gastronomic culture of the Region that will be taught by students and the presentation of videos.

This congress is organized by the Agroecology and Ecodevelopment Network of the Region of Murcia and the general direction of Attention to the Diversity and Educational Quality of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Autonomous Community of the Region.

It is sponsored by the University of Murcia and the Council of Organic Agriculture of the Region of Murcia and has the collaboration of various organizations, associations and companies.

The Congress emerged with the aim of addressing the main agrifood challenges of the 20th century (loss of agricultural biodiversity, climate change, food and energy crisis, ..), in the field of non-university education and social entities (foundations, associations ...) that develop educational / training actions.

It is also conceived as a space that brings students closer to the world of science and its reality, as well as to promote communicative competence and promote values related to teamwork, responsibility and commitment.

The Congress, in this first edition, has focused on the recovery of flavors (local varieties, autochthonous races) and knowledge (peasant culture) of the wise Huertanos and peasants of the Region.

Both resources (flavors and knowledge), subjected to a process of irreversible extinction, are considered of vital importance for the development of an agro-ecological agroecological system, in harmony with the Sustainable Development Goals.
