Archaeologists will continue to work in the San Esteban field given the importance of the findings so far (17/05/2019)

The Governing Board has approved the second addendum of the collaboration agreement with the University of Murcia, for scientific research, training, enhancement and dissemination of the Archaeological Site of San Esteban, and the authorization of the expense amounting to 171,094 euros.

In this way, archaeologists will continue working in the area given the interest and importance of the findings found so far.

With this extension of the agreement, it will be possible to deepen in Sites I and II, as well as expand the excavation area in the cemetery.

This third research period will allow to maintain the research work and scientific analysis in this field.

The current phase, in which specialized research is being carried out in collaboration with different national and international laboratories, will end on June 20, so it is necessary to extend this period.

The studies that are being developed consist of a series of Carbon 14 analytics that allow us to specify the chronology of the bones found in the cemetery, as well as a Mitochondrial DNA study to define possible kinship relationships.

It is also carrying out a stable isotope analysis on bone remains, to define the diet of the inhabitants of the Arrabal.

These and other studies will be decisive for the definitive value of the site and the future Interpretation Center.

It must be remembered that the deadline for the submission of bids to the project contest with jury intervention is now open for the enhancement of the archaeological site of the Andalusian settlement of La Arrixaca and the San Esteban garden in Murcia.

The deadline for submission of possible teams culminates on July 5.
