Researchers from the University of Murcia go from bars to the Pint of Science (17/05/2019)

Three bars Murcia will host six informative talks on the occasion of the international festival Pint of Science that will take place on May 20, 21 and 22, from 19 hours.

This event, organized by the Unit of Scientific Culture of the University of Murcia (UCC + i of the UMU), the Association of Scientific Dissemination of the Region of Murcia (ADC Murcia) and the Association of Biotechnologists of the Region of Murcia (BiotecMur), and coordinated in turn by the ADC Murcia, starts next Monday, May 20 at the Bar, where the first two talks will be given.

One of them will be the professor of Animal Health of the UMUC Christian de la Feque, with the conference 'From the farm to the plate', will explain the challenge of reducing the consumption of antibiotics to reduce resistance to them. The problem is not only It affects those who abuse antibiotics, since it is not the person who becomes resistant but the bacterium that carries, being this susceptible to be transmitted to any person or animal.

Also, Helena Flores, president of the Association 'STEM Talent', with his talk 'Where are women in science and technology?', Will delve into the causes why technical careers have only 21% of students enrolled in the Region.

The second day, which will take place on May 21 at Bar El Sur, will be attended by two UMU researchers, Adrián Guerrero Gómez, environmental scientist of the Department of Zoology and Physical Anthropology, and Laura Espín López, professor of Psychobiology.

Guerreronos will talk about the situation, "a bit rough" according to the expert, in which are some vertebrates that historically have not been given enough importance: amphibians (small animals that need both land and water to your survival).

In addition, this environmental scientist will delve into his situation in the Region of Murcia, one of the driest areas of Spain and, paradoxically, the orchard of Europe.

The researcher Laura Espín will share the talk 'Stress and gender: approach from neuroscience'.

According to this expert, men and women respond differently to stress situations, specifically referring to biological factors, specifically, mainly the role of gonadal hormones.

In his lecture he will also explain how they can affect the phases of the menstrual cycle in responses to stress.

Finally, this activity ends with the presentations of the May 22nd in Inca. The principal investigator of the Immunity, Inflammation and Cancer group of the UMU, Victoriano Mulero, will talk about the zebrafish as a model to advance in biomedicine and, for its part, María Luisa Galbis , professor of the Department of Genetics of the UMU, that will approach us in an entertaining way to the essence of being: our genome.

The event will also be active through Twitter, where you can share questions, comment on the talks or spread them through the hashtag # Pint19MUR, for Murcia, or # PINT19ES, for all of Spain.

"Science has a lot to say, and wants to do it in a close way, to anyone who has an interest in research, in spaces as common to all as bars, that is Pint of Science: a meeting point between researchers and the people in an environment conducive to relaxed conversation, before your favorite drink, "explains Jorge Bueno, national coordinator of the festival.

Of reeds with science

Pint of Science is an international festival devoted to science that aims to bring science to society, to ordinary people.

Its main objective is to offer interesting, understandable, entertaining and fun talks about the latest scientific research, all in a bar.

This festival is held annually for three days in 73 Spanish cities, including Murcia, Lorca or Cartagena, as well as in 24 countries around the world.

A relaxed atmosphere in which researchers explain their work to a heterogeneous audience.

This initiative has been taking place since 2012, when two experts from the United Kingdom organized an event called 'Meet the Researchers', taking people affected by Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease, among other diseases, to their laboratories to show them the type of investigations they carried out.

This led them to think that "If there are people so interested in scientific advances as to come to our laboratory, what would happen if we took the science to the bars?".

An international movement in growth

The 5th edition of the festival is joined by 17 cities more than in 2018 (56). Spain this year is the 2nd country with more venues of this festival of scientific popularization in the world, second only to Brazil, with 87 cities. of Pint of Science 2019 includes 313 female speakers, representing 41% of the total.

"When we had to think about speakers for the first edition of the festival, we did not have the names of scientists in mind, and not because of a lack of powerful researchers, but because we did not know them, since then, we have been very careful in designing the program and , for that reason, we want to reach 50% of female participation in 2020 ", explains Xenia Villalobos, second national coordinator of Pint of Science 2019.

See you in the bars (starting at 7pm) toasting for knowledge!
