The City Council launches a special campaign to fight against the red palm weevil (15/05/2019)

The protection against the boll weevil is essential for the City Council and therefore we are working on the application of phytosanitary treatments at night, except in the palm groves of Santiago and Zaraiche, which is carried out during the day.

Murcia City Council and its concessionaire for the maintenance of parks and gardens STV Gestión have developed, during several months, the phytosanitary treatments in the palms of the municipality, mainly at night, to avoid any possible problem to people, animals and traffic when doing the works.

"This year, in addition, there has been a special circumstance, and that is that the advance of the warmer temperatures has meant that we have had to act immediately so that the boll weevil can not reproduce, for which we have mounted a special device increasing 50% of the workforce that we normally allocate to these tasks, all with the same goal: to win another year the battle of the picudo, "explains the mayor of Modernization and Urban Development, José Guillén.

The work is carried out by qualified personnel of the STV Gestión concessionaire that acts at night to reduce the possible inconvenience to neighbors and pets and to the normal operation of the traffic, "except in the case of the well-known Palm Grove of Santiago and Zaraiche , where he has acted in the morning to perform a quicker and more effective, "says the mayor Guillén.

The City Council continues to try and act against this and other possible pests with the continuous monitoring and care of these palm trees that fill the different green areas of the municipality of Murcia.
