The Plenary approves an Institutional Declaration to support the Association of families of children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (30/04/2019)

The Municipal Plenary has approved an institutional declaration to show the support of the City Council to the demands of the Association of families of children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and urge the Government of the Nation and the Government of the Region of Murcia to promote the recognition of disorders of the fetal alcohol spectrum (TEAF) and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (SAF) as a chronic disease.

Thus, it is requested to elaborate a diagnosis protocol, treatment and monitoring of this syndrome, establishing a network of reference centers where the most serious cases can be derived, in order to guarantee access to the health interventions needed by affected patients, both in terms of diagnosis and monitoring of the disease, with the inclusion of measures to improve the quality of life.

The institutional declaration also includes developing training programs for professionals in all the areas involved, aimed at improving the early identification of the TEAF / SAF and the related pathologies, as well as the competences related to caring for those affected and their families.

Likewise, the counseling is urged to include the TEAF / SAF among the sociosanitary pathologies susceptible of aid programs and to train the appraisers of the Murciano Institute of Social Action related to disability and dependency, so that once the children are diagnosed with TEAF / SAF easily access the necessary aids for their care and personal training.

Finally, the approved text includes promoting information and training for the sick and the sick and their families, with the aim of facilitating knowledge of health and social resources in this case, thus optimizing the treatment and follow-up of these patients.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders occur in people whose mothers drank alcohol during pregnancy and include a range of serious physical, behavioral, and learning problems.

The most intense form in which it can occur is known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
