Clemente García dies, gold medal of the UMU and one of the architects of the Espinardo Campus (12/04/2019)

It was in December 2011, three decades after finishing his term as mayor of the city of Murcia, when Clemente García received the UMU gold medal.

Far behind was the period in which, as the highest dignitary of the municipality of Murcia, he had promoted the Espinardo Campus, laying the foundations for it to become the main focus of university studies in the Region.

Yesterday, Clemente García died at the age of 82 years.

His mortal remains are being veiled this Friday in the room number 8 of the funeral of Jesus, in Espinardo, where many political representatives and various personalities are moving to express their condolences to the family.

In December 2011, the Claustro of the University of Murcia awarded the UMU gold medal to Clemente García, member of the Social Council of the institution for many years and general secretary of the Regional Confederation of Business Organizations (CROEM).

The then rector of the University of Murcia, José Antonio Cobacho, promoter of that concession, noted that "during his long term as a member of the Social Council has been one of the firmest defenders of the Public University of Murcia", highlighting his decisive participation in the creation of the Espinardo campus, in the University-Business Foundation and in the Strategic Plan of the University of Murcia.

Born on June 29, 1936, he held the position of Mayor of Murcia between 1972 and 1979. He was a Doctor of Law from the University of Murcia and belonged, among others, to the Academy of Legislation and Jurisprudence

In addition, he has authored different books on the Spanish Transition and other matters related to Jurisprudence and Law.

His last visit to the University of Murcia was in January of this year, to meet with Rector José Luján and ask for the collaboration of the Communication Service in the preparation of a book he was preparing on one of his favorite topics: the relationship between the university and the world of the company.

In the archives of the service, he expressed his intention to collaborate in the enhancement of this important university archive.

A book to which his death put an inevitable and sad end point.

Rest in peace.
