The presidents of the Government, the COE and the UCAM reaffirm their commitment to our athletes (08/04/2019)

Pedro Sánchez, Alejandro Blanco and José Luis Mendoza have spoken at the headquarters of the Spanish Olympic Committee in front of an auditorium full of high level athletes for the presentation of the COE Athlete Assistance Office.

The president of the UCAM shelled out the services that this university is making available to the COE, work that was widely praised, especially for its dual model of tutoring that allows athletes to continue studying without leaving their training and competitions.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has acknowledged that "it is time for sport to be a priority and its role and positive influence for Spain is recognized.

It is time for us to live up to your efforts.

We will work in public institutions to be at your level.

You teach us that competition and respect are inseparable, that it is not worth winning at any price, but that we must claim fair play. "

Alejandro Blanco has detailed in detail all the areas of the Office of Attention to the Athlete where there is a psychological counseling, legal assistance, personalized attention, health care, job bank and scholarships for studies and training available to all athletes who are enrolled in she.

In the academic part, the important role played by the UCAM in allowing athletes to combine their studies with their sports career has been highlighted.

Also, the president of the COE thanked all athletes for the "daily" effort they make, because "your struggle is an example for all and, for you, we are all here, working in the present to create the future.

You deserve as much support as possible during your career and outside of it. "

He also highlighted the work they do with the UCAM: "I think we are a role model." Everywhere I go, the people of the Olympic movement ask me what we are doing. It was an idea that we had from the beginning but it has been with José Luis (Mendoza) and the UCAM when it has been strengthened, thanks to Jose Luis and the entire teaching team because thanks to them the athletes can make their sporting life the time to train for the future. "

Also, in his speech he highlighted the need to start up the 'University of Sports' that the UCAM and the COE have projected in Alcorcón, asking for their support to the President of the Government for this project.

The president of the Catholic University of Murcia, José Luis Mendoza, who awarded scholarships to the athletes assigned to the OAD, has described his model, which in addition to supporting the athlete's academic career through the scholarships "personalizes his study itinerary" .

Mendoza has highlighted the important investment made by the UCAM "dedicated to Olympic and professional sports."

For his part, the Secretary of State for Sport, María José Rienda, said that "sportsmen are references and inspiration, but careers do not last a lifetime, training is essential, the athlete does not want to be given anything, he wants facilities to make his studies compatible ".

The event, attended by members of the International Olympic Committee, presidents of international and Spanish federations, elite and Olympic athletes, as well as the most outstanding sports authorities of our country, has been presented by the Olympic balloonist Eli Pinedo and by the European runner-up of march, Diego García.

The boxer Rafael Lozano, current national coach and double Olympic medalist, the Olympic handball and trainer Montse Puche, and the Olympic triathlete Pilar Hidalgo, have told during the presentation how the OAD gave them help "from one day to another to overcome personal bumps that they crossed after leaving the high competition ".
