The tribulations of the comic artist Pepo Pérez at the University of Murcia (29/03/2019)

The professor and artist Pepo Pérez will take a tour through his career in comics, focusing on his most popular work, El vecino, which is being adapted to a TV series for Netflix and that we can enjoy on this platform from 2020.

In this way, the University of Murcia (UMU) presents the talk 'Your friendly NEIGHBOR Pepo Perez: Tribulations of a cartoonist', which will take place next April 1 at 7:30 pm at the Colette Bookshop, and will be guided by the Murcia cartoonist Juan Álvarez, who publishes Playboy, Thursday, Blue or Penthouse Comix, among others.

The neighbor is a series of graphic novels that Pepo Pérez has drawn and colored with scripts by Santiago García (3 volumes published by Astiberri Ediciones, and a fourth in process plus numerous short stories).

It is a work of fiction, written in a metaphorical and symbolic key.

In the words of Pérez: "a daily comedy about human and sentimental relationships, and a fantastic plot premise: there is a superhero inside".

This same day, April 1, in the morning, at 10:00 a.m., in the meeting room of the Faculty of Communication and Documentation (Campus de Espinardo), in a work meeting with the group SIRA study of Arabic comics , Pérez will speak about the 'Memory and trauma in the international comic book'.

The artist will illustrate us with his latest lines of research, such as memory in international comics or the representation of traumatic memory;

a comic based on reality, "taking into account that most of the traditional comic, the twentieth century, was based on humor or genre fiction: adventures, superheroes, science fiction, etc," says Perez.

After the same, the round table 'The Arab comic, the Arab and the comic' will take place, whose objective will be to facilitate the interaction, cooperation and transfer of different joint activities on the comic as a tool to approach the knowledge of the Arab world.

The forum will be attended, along with Pepo Pérez, by the members of the SIRA group (Pilar Garrido, Leonor María Ruiz, Delfina Roca and Pedro Rojo) and the students Soumia Abid Bridaa, Imad Boussif and Sanaa Hadaji, who will contribute their vision on how they feel identified in the different comics of the Arab world.

This event is part of the II International Day of the Comic and the Arab World: tool of knowledge and intervention.

This first event is the starting point of an initiative that will continue throughout the following week, coinciding with the celebrations of the Communication and Documentation Faculty of the UMU, in which different workshops will be held to disseminate knowledge through the comic: with illustrator of live manga, exhibition, live music, and even a periodic table in real size in which each element corresponds to a comic according to different thematic categories.

The services of the UMU involved in the development of this action have been the Unit of Scientific Culture and Innovation (UCC + i), the Faculty of Communication and Documentation, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts.
