The Hospital Bridge becomes the 'zero zone' of the plan of action against the invasion of pigeons in Vistabella (27/03/2019)

The Municipal Services of Municipal Projects and Projects and of Health have begun today the works to clean this structure, where they nest near 400 units, and to install a special network that prevents that this situation is repeated in the future.

The pigeon control program, which is developed throughout the municipality and last year made it possible to capture about 3,800 birds, is reinforced by the publication of 10,000 leaflets under the title 'Let's avoid pigeons being a problem' and allow us to enjoy a healthy environment

The City of Murcia has declared war on health problems and damage to the heritage and urban furniture caused by pigeons.

Its invasion and proliferation is especially significant in the neighborhood of Vistabella, where they have provoked neighborhood complaints.

To end this situation, one of the main focuses of action will be the Queen Sofía Hospital Bridge, where this morning the councilors of Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, and Sports and Health, Rebeca Pérez and Felipe Coello, respectively, have witnessed the beginning of the cleaning work of this structure, where at present more than 400 specimens nest.

To solve this problem and, at the same time, prevent this situation from recurring in the future, the plan designed by the Municipal Services and Municipal Projects and Health is the cleaning of the bridge and the installation of a special network that ends with the massive nesting of birds in the lower part that forms the three bridge boards.

In them, the intense accumulation of excrement causes deterioration in the affected elements, in addition to lack of hygiene and possible spread of different diseases.

Mesh in beams and slabs

With a budget of almost 30,000 euros and a deadline of one month, the device designed consists of an intense cleaning of the surfaces affected by the excrement, adopting the necessary measures to avoid contamination of the water given the proximity of the riverbed Segura .

With this objective, a 50 mm mesh system will be placed in stone color that will be installed in the beams and slabs of the lower base of the three bridges that currently serve as nesting space for birds.

It will be resistant to UVA and moisture.

The works will include the use of steel cables for frames, bolts for fixing the steel cables, tensioners for the steel cables, nut hooks to fix the steel cable frame and clips to join the network to the frame.

'Feeders' of birds

The special intervention on the bridge is due to the fact that it has been found to be a nesting center for hundreds of pigeons, which are the cause of constant problems in Vistabella, aggravated by other reasons:

- The urbanism of the neighborhood, with dwellings of roofs to two waters, that makes difficult the placement of cages, as well as the non-existence of wide areas, with lawn or similar, that allows the capture with networks.

- Narrow sidewalks, with tall trees that allow the nesting of these birds.

- The proximity of places where these birds find food (dairy in the hamlet of Los Dolores).

- The difficulty of finding neighbors that allow to install capture cages in their homes.

- The existence in the neighborhood of "feeders" of these birds.

Therefore, Health will proceed to increase the installation of cages (at the moment there are two) and capture with nets on the river mote in front of the neighborhood and has published 10,000 copies of the brochure that, with the title 'Let's avoid pigeons being a problem ', it is intended to ensure that these birds do not cause discomfort and allow neighbors to enjoy a healthy environment.

In this regard, the publication recalls that the supply of food to animals on public roads causes an uncontrolled increase in the population of birds in the city, favors overcrowding and the appearance of diseases, in addition to being prohibited by the ordinance.

The uncontrolled activity of pigeons carries health risks, causes the deterioration of hygienic conditions and causes damage to structures.

The pigeon control program has 25 cages distributed by neighborhoods and districts, which last year allowed to capture about 3,800 specimens.
