The picture Christ and the Samaritan woman next to the well return to the Rector's Office of the University of Murcia (25/03/2019)

The painting "Christ and the Samaritan woman next to the well appear to Saint Teresa of Jesus", returns to the place where it has been exhibited during the last decades.

The work of José Camarón Boronat dates from the second half of the 18th century, and is one of the valuable paintings donated by Álvaro d'Estoup and Barrios to the University of Murcia in 1948, the first artistic donation received by the UMU and the origin of a valuable and varied collection of paintings and sculptures made up of more than 750 works.

The painting was in a poor state of conservation: dirt and repaints on the pictorial surface and an enlienzado applied in an inaccurate previous intervention, as well as a deep cut in the lower part.

The work has been restored in the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia, in a process that has included the chemical removal of the dirt layer, the layer of oxidized varnish and the repaints from the previous restoration.

The result has allowed to recover the original colors of the XVIII century, that now shine in all their splendor.

The work addresses the theme of the Water of Life, very present in the work of the Saint of Ávila, and belongs to José Camarón Boronta, who was director of the Royal Academy of San Carlos in Valencia and one of the main Levantine artists of his epoch (second half of the XVIII).

In the act of reception, held this morning in the Center of Restoration of the Region of Murcia, the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guardiola, highlighted that, in recent years, there are hundreds of works of art that have gone through the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia that, otherwise, would have been lost.

The Councilor alluded to the agreement signed this year between University and Counseling to continue repairing the important heritage of the UMU, and said that this work, "Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well appear to Saint Teresa of Jesus", returns to the University of Murcia to enjoy all Murcia ".

Rector Luján, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the Restoration Center for his "extraordinary work in pursuit of the recovery of the heritage of the Region of Murcia", and for allowing the great artistic heritage of the UMU to be permanently in optimal conditions to be enjoyed by all citizens.
