The University of Murcia celebrates the grand finale of MasterChem (22/03/2019)

The 1st edition of MasterChem comes to an end after an extraordinary reception after almost 250 participants from the entire Region of Murcia participated in its first phase.

Now, the finalist groups will have to show that they are the best amateur chemists in the Region.

The event will take place on March 23 at 10:30 am in the courtyard of the La Merced campus.

The schools that will compete for the long-awaited award will be Los Álamos, Escultor Salzillo, CEI, IES Alcántara, IES Saavedra Fajardo, San Buenaventura and IES Poeta Julián Andúgar.

All of them, through their teams, will fight according to Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate categories.

The nine finalists (three from each category) will conduct a live experiment in front of the attendees.

The difficulty lies in that they will not know the elaboration and the products that they will have to use until they open the boxes in which will be the necessary material to develop it and begin the test.

Following the wake of the culinary program, when the time runs out, the participants will have to show the result of the experiment before an exceptional jury formed by Bernardo Herradón, of the Organic Chemistry Institute of the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (CSIC);

Gabriel Pinto, from the Polytechnic University of Madrid;

and Mercedes Pastor Blas, from the University of Alicante.

The winners will be able to choose a trip together with their team to the City of Arts and Sciences of Valencia.

The second prize will be digital books and for the third finalists will be given educational games and activity wristbands.

MasterChem is a project of the Unit of Scientific Culture of the University of Murcia that was born to encourage scientific vocations from the students of the Region with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

In addition, it has the help of other entities in the Region such as the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia, the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), both nationally and regionally;

the Faculty of Chemistry, companies such as Tecnoquim or Aquadeus.
