The Community gives the restored image of the Virgin of the Incarnation to the parish of Churra (21/03/2019)

The carving of Our Lady of the Incarnation, patroness of the Murcia hamlet of Churra, has returned today to her parish after the restoration to which she has been subjected in the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia, a space dependent on the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

In May of 2018, the image suffered different damages in the assault to the church, during which the jewels of the patron were stolen, recovered shortly afterwards.

It is a polychrome wood carving made towards the middle of the 20th century by the sculptor José Sánchez Lozano.

An image of dress that was transformed in its day, incorporating a wooden structure that has replaced the reels.

Body, arms and lower area (skirt) show a polychrome in sky blue covered with fleshy scrolls of golden tones, in the manner of a dress.

On this it is dressed with blunts like the apron or apron, tight body and sleeves.

The General Director of Cultural Heritage, Juan Antonio Lorca, attended the delivery of the carving after passing through the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia, "a center of national reference equipped with the best technology in which great experts work in imagery and where it has been returned to this beautiful carving of Sánchez Lozano all its splendor ".

Regarding the image, Lorca stressed, "in addition to its artistic value, the great sentimental value it has for the neighbors of Churra, as it is their employer and, in addition, for the fact of having been involved in an act as reprehensible as was the theft of his jewelry in the middle of last year. "

Intervention

During the tests carried out in the regional center, specifically through the study of ultraviolet fluorescence of the surface, it was found the presence of repaints on the face and hands of the Virgin that were applied during an unfortunate intervention carried out in 2007, which altered partially the original design of Sánchez Lozano.

Regarding the intervention carried out for approximately three months, the person in charge of Cultural Assets explained that, "not only has he focused on the damages caused during the robbery (fracture of the middle finger of the left hand, blows and scratches), since they have been also dealt with other previously existing damages, such as those created by pins in clothing and other small bumps and detachments, in addition to subjecting it to intense cleaning ".

In general terms, the process carried out consisted in a cleaning of the generalized dirt layer of the pictorial layer of the head and hands, in the adhesion of the fractured finger, the coating of gaps and a differentiated chromatic reintegration.

Finally a varnished protection has been applied to the size with the aim of guaranteeing its conversation in the best conditions.

Physical-chemical cleaning has been one of the processes of greatest technical complexity.

Cleaning on polychrome layers of the second half of the twentieth century are always complex, and even more in this case, in which it has finally had to be maintained, given its breadth and the state of conservation of the original stratum, the polychromy applied during the previous intervention.
