The disseminator, teacher and researcher of the UMU José Manuel López Nicolás has given the presentation 'Transgenics ... ¿an option for the future?', Which has taken place in the Faculty of Biology, one of the centers protagonists of the month dedicated to goal 2 ' Zero Hunger '.
During his presentation, the researcher has provided a contrasted vision of the world of genetic modifications in food.
In the words of López Nicolás, "the fact that a food is genetically manipulated does not automatically convert it into an unsafe food".
In fact, "genetic modification makes these foods a fully controlled source of food."
As explained, we have had the opportunity to know the benefits of transgenic for the eradication of hunger in the world, with brilliant examples such as golden rice.
In this case, the production is carried out through genetic engineering processes, synthesizing the beta-carotene precursors in the edible parts of the grain.
Thanks to this product, and despite having some deficiencies, it is possible to combat vision problems of people residing in areas of the world where food is based mainly on rice consumption.
Examples like the previous one and others like wheats resistant to drought or high salinity, make genetic modifications can be an excellent ally to combat hunger in the world, said López Nicolás.
17 ODSesiones is the project the University of Murcia is developing for the promotion and awareness of the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations.
Until April 2021, the University will dedicate one month to each of these objectives with outreach, play, training and solidarity activities.
The first month was February, which was dedicated to the goal 'End of poverty'.
The month of March revolves around the goal 'Zero Hunger'.
