The Faculty of Communication and Documentation of the UMU launches its first participatory budgets (14/03/2019)

The Faculty of Communication and Documentation has culminated the participatory budgeting campaign at the University of Murcia.

Prior to Communication and Documentation, the Faculties of Biology and Fine Arts were the centers that initiated the participatory budgets of the University of Murcia.

Participatory Budgeting is a tool for citizen participation and participatory democracy, through which citizens, university students in this case, can decide the fate of a part of public resources, seeking among all the best solutions to existing needs.

Advised by the Council of Transparency of the Region of Murcia, the Faculty of Communication and Documentation has decided to allocate a 4'5 percent of its budget to these participatory budgets.

According to José Molina, president of the Transparency Council of the Region of Murcia, the participatory budgets, which now begin at the UMU in this initiative of the Faculty of Communication and Documentation, constitute "a challenge to begin to open public spending from the citizenship, to be able to manage better, with more efficiency, and above all so that the citizens can incorporate their own commitment to increase the quality of the institutions ".

Molina assures that "We intend to establish a test bank, selecting a series of projects that have been carried out in the Faculty of Communication and Documentation, and subsequently we will vote, because one of the things that we have to get used to is to discuss and establish what are the priorities?

According to Pedro Hellín, dean of the Faculty of Communication and Documentation, the objective of this call for participatory budgets is "to generate a participation tool for the entire university community that lives in this faculty to create projects that allow the involvement of students, teachers and administration staff and services in jobs that contribute to the general improvement of the faculty ".
