Mariano García and Sergio López join the UCAM project (13/03/2019)

Glasgow is already for the history of athletics in the Region of Murcia as the city in which two of its athletes jumped to the international scene against all odds.

Mariano García (21 years old) and Sergio López (19) arrived at the Indoor European Championships with the sole objective of taking international experience and enjoying their status as members of the Spanish team.

But already in the competition, both stopped being secondary actors to become protagonists.

Mariano Garcia finished fourth in 800 meters and Sergio Lopez was about to get into the final of the 60 meters.

The sprinter is left with the positive part of everything he experienced: "It was a dream come true and that motivates me a lot to continue working and match these results in the open air events and reach a final or semifinal of the European Championship."

Also for Mariano García, his result was totally unexpected: "It was a surprise to qualify for the 800 in the European Championship and that is why I made each race as a final and I stayed a few hundredths away from the medal. also in absolute category I think I've done a great role but I want to improve it. "

Academic challenge: the Degree in Science of Physical Activity and Sport

Both were already linked to the UCAM through their clubs, but in the next academic year they want to complete that link by studying the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science (CAFD) of the UCAM.

Sergio emphasizes that the model of tutoring for athletes and the flexibility of the Catholic University with them will be key: "It is very difficult to combine studies and sports because we are many hours working on the track but hopefully I can continue studying and professionally dedicate myself to athletics".

For his part, Mariano is also clear that he wants to take advantage of this opportunity offered by the UCAM: "I want to study the Degree in CAFD and if I can combine it with my sporting activity it would be a great help because in other universities maybe that opportunity would not have it. "
