Activists and members of "Unidas Podemos" debate in Aljucer on pensions and equality (13/03/2019)

High attendance in the talk-debate "Pensions and Women" convened in Aljucer, where attendees discussed the present and future of pensions in Murcia, with Pedro Martínez (lawyer), Miguel Campillo (former trade unionist and activist in defense of the public pensions), and Esther Herguedas and Javier Sánchez Serna (candidates for the Congress of Deputies for United We Can).

The event was moderated by Maribel Cabezos, member of the Municipal Board of Aljucer and feminism municipal secretary of Podemos Murcia.

Pedro Martínez was in charge of carrying out a historical analysis of the Spanish pension system and a comparison with the European pension systems.

According to the lawyer: "In Germany and other European countries the pension system is financed by the contributions of workers and companies, but also via taxes, what happens with the pension fund in Spain is somewhat atypical", ending with the demand that the Spanish model also use both means of financing to sustain the pension system and stop limiting itself to the path of contributions.

Miguel Campillo wanted to contribute the point of view of the pensioners and showed the concern of the collective: "Pensioners are concerned about maintaining a decent pension system, but dignity must be specified with figures and the present pension is very volatile."

The former trade unionist remarked that "since 2012, we have had 7 years of freezing of pensions and only the mobilization of pensioners has managed to get this year updated according to the CPI."

In Campillo's opinion, "we have won a small battle, but there is still work to be done and the public pension system must be protected in the constitution and this must be equitable."

Esther Herguedas, gave the point of view from the situation of women, a group especially affected by the problem of pensions, according to Herguedas "nothing has been given to women, everything we have achieved has been thanks to the struggle, but there is still a lot to go "because, although he acknowledged that progress has been made during these years, he also stressed the fact that" although laws have been created, these laws have not been financed ", the congress candidate made special mention of the fact that the wage gap is taking hold in women's pensions "it is essential to advance in labor and salary equality to reduce the pension wage gap, which currently stands at 25%".

Javier Sanchez Serna, began his speech by showing his discomfort for not having been able to approve the budgets: "A few weeks ago we left the congress with a bittersweet feeling because we could not approve budgets in which we had worked for the people".

Until a few days ago deputy of United We can in the Congress of Deputies, was very upset with the rest of formations for the partisan use of the country and its symbols: "We are going to a campaign in which many will put in the center the flag, but they will hide that at the moment of truth their flag is not the people ", even more critical was Sanchez Serna with the pretensions of the rest of the parties to promote the private pension plans" whenever it is the markets that regulate rights there are those who earn a lot, very few, but many who lose ".

In Serna's opinion, "those who told us that we had lived beyond our means are those who now tell us that we live too many years".

The head of the conference list also conveyed a message of encouragement "no matter how much they tell us that we can not, we have already shown that this is not the case, that if it is possible, that when there is a social muscle we can bend them and change the story that they sell us. "

In the final section of the act, a good number of attendees wanted to intervene to put on the table issues such as the repeal of the latest labor reforms, discontent with certain aspects of the Toledo Pact, the housing problems of several families of Aljucer and places adjoining, the fines imposed on neighbors of Santiago El Mayor and other collectives as a result of the "Gag Law", etc.

Finally, the meeting ended with the conviction of the speakers on the need to guarantee present and future pensions through all legal formulas that are necessary, fixing as a final idea that it is possible and necessary to make policies that shield the public pension system.
